On WW Day I’m sure you have covered this item in safety with your other non school bus drivers 🇨🇦🇺🇸 🚍🚨 #SchoolBusSafetyWeek – Ever wondered why school buses stop at every railway crossing? Simple answer: It’s the law! 🛑 School bus drivers are required to stop at all train tracks, look both ways, and listen for any approaching trains. This crucial safety procedure is part of their school bus driver training. The law was tragically born out of necessity. In December 1938, a devastating incident occurred in Utah when a bus driver crossed a railway track, thinking it was clear, resulted in a fatal collision with a train. Since then, safety protocols have evolved to help prevent such tragedies. Here’s what happens at every railway crossing: 1. 🚌 The bus stops. 2. 👀 The driver opens the door and window for a clear view. 3. 🔊 They look both ways and listen thoroughly for approaching trains. While it might add a few moments to your commute, this practice ensures that the safety of our students to and from school is ultimately of the highest importance. Taking that extra step is worth it to protect our precious passengers. 🚸✨

October 21-25th is National School Bus Safety Week. School buses transport more than 20 million students each day and are one of the safest modes of transportation for students. However, illegal bus passing poses a significant threat to children and others on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were nearly a thousand fatal school bus accidents between 2013 and 2022, with most accidents occurring when children are getting on or off the bus. With daylight saving time ending and darker days ahead, it's crucial to stay alert around school buses. Below are safety tips for both drivers and parents of children riding school buses: 1. Stop at least 10 feet from a bus with its stop-arm extended. 2. Slow down for yellow flashing lights; stop for red lights. 3. Slow down and watch for kids near a bus stop. 4. Ensure kids arrive early to the bus stop and wait 10 feet from the curb. 5. Children should always cross in front of the bus, making eye contact with the driver. Let's work together to keep our kids safe.
