⚫ Today, as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, we reflect on the ongoing work of environmental justice in the Charlotte area's communities. 🔵 Communities of color continue to face disproportionate exposure to pollution, lack of green spaces, and climate impacts. Dr. King taught us that justice cannot wait – and that includes ensuring every neighborhood has clean air to breathe, safe streets for walking and gathering, and a healthy environment for families to thrive. 🟡 One powerful path forward is investing in people-first infrastructure that makes our neighborhoods both greener and more connected. When we design our streets and spaces around people rather than cars, we create cleaner air, stronger communities, and a healthier planet for all. 🟢 Let's build a region where environmental wellbeing and livable communities are rights, not privileges. January 20, 2025, is the 30th anniversary as a National Day of Service. According to Department of Defense Education Activity, "this day was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, and to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities." (source: dodea.edu) With young kids, you don't always get access to community-service opportunities. That's why in 2022, I encouraged my family to create our own service activity in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For about three years, we've collected garbage (around 15 pounds) around our neighborhood. My aim is to show them how we can make a difference, no matter the size of the action. Here's my Operations IRL Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service activity process:  --Decide on a day (we had to make a last-minute move from Monday to Saturday due to snow forecast) --Collect your supplies - gloves, trash bags; warm clothes to protect you for the elements --Get the group together and head out --Decide on a route --Collect the trash --Pose for a victory photo --Dispose of the trash It took a few minutes of planning, and it was simple for the group of us to accomplish this. It calls us to deepen our commitment to abolition, to resistance, to community, and to hope–hope that is radical, unshakable, and infinite. Remember that our resistance doesn't begin or end with any one administration. This is an ongoing, multi-generational struggle against the systems of power that marginalize, punish, and separate us.
