The standoff in North Carolina shows the failure of states across the country to adequately address the long-term-care needs of younger people with complex disabilities. Our healthcare system is in dire need of improvement. I am an advocate of post-acute care and what we been seeing much of over the last year is younger and younger people being referred to skilled nursing. While depending on the state, this may be the only option, however this young woman's story is a prime example of why we must do better! What are your thoughts? #UMSSW students joined nursing and medical students to enhance their skills for affirming health care practice with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. This interprofessional collaboration allowed the students to develop a more holistic understanding of providing inclusive and supportive care for this patient population. By working together, the students were able to learn from each other's unique perspectives and improve their ability to deliver high-quality, person-centered care.
