Parent: "I would like to speak to my son's counselor." Secretary: "Your son has five counselors. What is your concern today?" School counselors cannot be expected to be experts in all the issues and tasks we must contend with. I speak often about organizing your counseling department by domain. What are the benefits of domains? 🔥 Proactive vs Reactive 🔥 Every student receives lessons and individual counseling in all the ASCA domains. 🔥 Students don't slip through the cracks. 🔥 Counselors can leverage their strengths. 🔥 100% of students have a post-secondary plan. It works! If you would like more information and data to back this up, DM me! #schoolcounseling #collegecounseling

"Student at the University of Toronto Empowers Grandmothers and Promotes Mental Health with 'Grandma Knows Best' Initiative"
As a student writer I remember reflecting on an article in the University of Toronto's news featuring a happy family in front of student housing, which contrasted with my own experience of hardship and exclusion as a resident. The article was meant to portray a welcoming community for international students, but failed to address the harsh realities faced by many student families, particularly some of us. So I invited a few readers to consider the untold stories and challenges of living in the University of Toronto's Family Housing as a student with a daughter whose needs were not accommodated whilst trying to earn degrees, leading to this 'mock' like creation of a news story I created to encourage the University of Toronto to do right by my family or deal with the possibility of something being put together by someone more professional. Why is this important? How did the dilapidated conditions of my residential unit impact my health especially during the pandemic when my PhD journey began? Because dust and dilapidated housing conditions can potentially impact individuals with epilepsy in a few ways: 1. Allergies and Respiratory Issues: Dust, mold, and other allergens commonly found in dilapidated housing can trigger allergies and respiratory issues in individuals, including those with epilepsy. Respiratory problems or allergic reactions could potentially lead to increased stress on the body, which could in turn trigger seizures in some individuals with epilepsy. 2. Stress and Environmental Triggers: Living in poor housing conditions can contribute to stress, anxiety, and overall poor mental health, which are known triggers for seizures in some individuals with epilepsy. Additionally, exposure to environmental toxins or poor air quality in dilapidated housing may also act as triggers for seizures in sensitive individuals. 3. Safety Concerns: Dilapidated housing conditions may pose safety hazards such as exposed wiring, unstable structures, or fire risks, which could increase the likelihood of accidents or injuries that may trigger seizures in individuals with epilepsy. It's important for individuals with epilepsy to maintain a safe and healthy living environment to help manage their condition effectively. Meaning that if someone like me has epilepsy and is living in poor housing conditions that may be affecting their health, it is advisable to address these issues by seeking help from healthcare providers, social services, or housing assistance programs. Only for me as a student in living in this situation during a pandemic improving my living conditions could have contributed to my overall well-being helping me to manage my disabilities more effectively. Only that is not what happened. #UniversityofToronto #EpilepsyAwareness #HealthyLivingEnvironment #HousingConditions #HealthConcerns #SafetyFirst Remember: #YoursSilenceIsViolence

G-word terminology, shaming people who use the word guidance, and crossing out (X) guidance on t-shirts, mugs and posters is not a good look for school counseling. Simply put, there would not be school counselors if not for the groundbreaking work of guidance counselors. -------------------------------------------- School Counselor Next Generation Guidance We come from a long tradition of service. Did you know that guidance was advocating for child employment reform in the early 1900's? Or that guidance was a key component of the National Defense Education Act of 1958 that helped the United States put a man on the moon and was the genesis of many technologies that are commonplace today? School counselor is now our professional framework and title. We work to implement data-informed comprehensive programs that promote prevention and address multiple challenges that include advancing technology, mental health concerns and access to college and career options. When you refer to us by our school counselor title, it is a vote of confidence that we appreciate. Thank you for your continued trust and support as we continue to make contributions and advancements under the banner of school counselor.
