Process Improvements by changing the tast owners... Is it a reality? In East Surrey Hospital in Redhill under the Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, the linen cages are transported from the linen room to the wards by either housekeeping team members of the wards or by porters. Routinely this activity is in between 7.00 A.M. and 7.30 A.M. as the first task of their shift. Then the linen unloading and filling is a task assigned to Nursing Assistants. They start their shift at 8.00 A.M. With the clinical responsibilities the linen filling activity is not prioritised. With this the linen cages are held up in corridors for a considerable time, in some cases hours, and in worst cases until the next day. Due to this 4 major concerns arise. 1. The ward corridors are occupied by the linen cages, which creates disturbances for lot of activities (Space utilisation) 2. The soiled linen collection process get delayed and porters team should speak to the nursing team to get the cages cleared (Waiting) 3. One linen cage has linen for two or three wards. Some of the ward staff members take items belong to other wards (Process Control) 4. Anybody who pass through the corridor can access linen. This is a serious security concern on linen (Security). The process improvement project team evaluated this process and devoloped a simple proposal to assign the linen cupboard filling activity also to the person who transport the cage to the ward. Linen cupboard filling is a 5 to 10 minutes task.  In reality the housekeeping team members and porters have a list of activities to complete during their shifts. So, it will be another critical evaluation for the NHS Trust Management to compare the benefit of changing this task ownership against the rest of the changes.
