🤔 What is intumescent paint?
Intumescent paint is a special coating for steel, wood, and concrete surfaces. When exposed to heat, this paint reacts by intumescence, expanding up to 50 times its original thickness to form an insulating layer that protects the substrate from heat and flames.
🔍 How is it applied?
We prepare the steel according to the SA 2 ½ standard and apply a compatible primer before applying the intumescent coating. We use airless spray technology to ensure a uniform and efficient finish.
🚨 Critical factors
The coating thickness is determined by factors such as the shape factor (Hp/A), fire exposure, and the required resistance (e.g., R30, R60, R120). It is crucial to measure and control the thickness during application to ensure compliance with safety standards.
👉🏻 Differences between intumescent paint and fire-retardant paint
Unlike fire-retardant paint, which acts as a physical barrier, intumescent paint reacts chemically to heat, expanding to protect and slow the spread of fire. As passive fire protection elements, both are essential in fire safety.
In the images, you can see the application of intumescent paint on steel-structured cabins weighing 22 tons. The paint used was Steelguard 651 from PPG, with a total thickness exceeding 3000µm, applied in several layers up to 700µm per layer with a drying period between layers. There are also other alternatives such as:

◾ Promapaint SC3 and SC4 from PROMAT Promaint CMMS
◾ FX6010 from SHERWIN-WILLIAMS Sherwin-Williams
