The PropeIA program is a great example of the transformative power of combining practice and education in Kenya. It seamlessly integrates classroom learning with on-the-job training to allow students to become professionals in critical sectors. How does this program work? Apprentices spend one week each month at school, gaining essential theoretical knowledge. For the remaining three weeks, they apply what they have learned at partner companies under the guidance of experienced mentors. Swisscontact held a transformative CEO networking event within the framework of the PropelA dual apprenticeship programme, marking the close of 2023. The event brought together private sector entities, government officials, funders, industry experts, and apprentices united by a common vision for a collaborative and innovative future in Kenya's construction sector. Beyond networking, the event delved into the pressing topic of "The Future of Dual Vocational Programmes in the Construction Sector in Kenya: Emerging Opportunities and Trends." Renowned industry leaders engaged in profound discussions, addressing the significant gap between industry demand and skilled workforce, and the rising youth unemployment challenge in the country. Key takeaways included a unanimous call for curriculum review to impart real-world skills, with PropelA earning commendation for involving industry experts in this process. The unique model of direct industry investment in apprentices also drew attention, setting a new standard for skills development in the construction industry. A highlight was the presence of Mr. Werner Wallner, CEO of the Hilti Foundation, expressing pride in the programme's mission and impact, emphasising their commitment to creating opportunities for the youth and building a sustainable and prosperous career path. Elizabeth Bosibori, a plumbing apprentice currently attached at Davis & Shirtliff, highlighted that she joined the programme to gain experience and certification at the same time. Her goal is to demystify the idea that the construction industry in Kenya favours men and sees herself getting full-time employment after graduating. Dr. Steve Tharakan, Head of Mission/Deputy Permanent Representative to the Embassy of Switzerland in Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia, and Uganda emphasised the crucial role of Kenya-Switzerland collaboration in PropelA's success. He advocated for continued best practice exchange and expressed confidence in the programme's transformative potential for youth empowerment in Kenya. The event was more than discussions; it was a dynamic environment for forging connections, reflecting a collective commitment to shaping the future of construction through innovation and collaboration. As PropelA continues its impact, it is a testament to the dedication of all involved in fostering positive change and advancing Kenya's construction landscape and beyond. #PropelA is funded by the Hilti Foundation. As part of the #Swisscontact Development Programme, this project is co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). #DualApprenticeship #SkillsDevelopment #YouthEmpowerment #HiltiFoundation https://bit.ly/3HjWnjz

Another day, more insights and impact from the Danida funded Ajira Poa! project. Low cost approaches to apprenticeship yield results for youth! Do you have suggestions on how we can build on this going forwards to increase formal recognition of prior learning in Kenya?
Day two of our impact and learning series from the Danida funded Ajira Poa! (‘cool jobs’) project... Paul is one of 586 youth who undertook apprenticeships over the course of the project with 122 private businesses. Paul trained at HenMatt Metalwork Fabricators in 2022, after which he worked as a freelance welder. While freelancing, Paul actively participated in project trainings on financial literacy and enterprise development, which helped him create a strong business plan. Paul used his savings to found Unique Welders in Pipeline Estate, Nakuru. His business has grown remarkably, increasing revenue from KES 5,000 - 10,000 per month ($40 - $80) to KES 50,000-100,000 ($400 - $800), and he now employs five young people from the community. A minimal investment in stipends for apprentices and their hosts goes a long way Denmark in Kenya Quercus Group GrowthAfrica COLLEGE OF CAREER GUIDANCE & DEVELOPMENT KENYA ADS-North Rift #DanidaFunded #AjiraPoa! #Greenjobcreation #SuccessStories #Enterpreneurship

💡 Very insightful post from the amazing Gemma Gronland, MH&A, below. ⬇ Be sure to reach out to her for a discussion; I would be very happy to arrange an introduction. #education #apprenticeships #industry
Specialist in curriculum development and implementation and qualification design and delivery. Currently working in the UK and West Africa.
My work in the UK and Ghana education systems involves thinking a lot about apprenticeships; from their part in increasing productivity, to how they address skills gaps at the right occupational competency level - and importantly, how they can be responsive to context. In light of this, I have been reading the CSR reports of energy and mining companies, operating on the African continent, to get a sense of how apprenticeships are being developed and delivered to service these expanding sectors, and to tackle youth unemployment. The mining sector is steadily growing on the continent, given its vast reserves and advancing automation and technology. Additionally, the energy sector is a significant contributor to GDP in many African countries, accounting for a healthy % of GDP and exports. But Africa faces high youth unemployment rates, whilst being a continent of young people (60% under 25). Optimistically though, countries in Africa are set to be big players in renewable energy by 2030 (IRENA), creating fertile ground for developing apprenticeships. Many examples I have explored are in South Africa, where companies such as Exxaro are delivering ‘learnership’ entry-level programmes. Others, such as the company Harmony, are doing interesting work on their apprenticeship programmes to help tackle gender-based violence (reported in rural mining contexts) and to address stereotypes (by increasing a talent pipeline of historically disadvantaged people). I’d be really interested in engaging with professionals, in Africa and around the world, on the delivery of such apprenticeships in these sectors. 👩🏫 Your insights requested: 💡 What are some other successful apprenticeship programmes in Africa's energy and / or mining sectors? 💡How have these programmes impacted local communities and the broader industry / how are they being evaluated? 💡What challenges and opportunities do you see in expanding such initiatives across the continent? 💡Given Ghana has overtaken South Africa as the continent’s biggest producer of gold what opportunities are there in this industry? Please reach out for a conversation, I would love to discuss 🗺

The UK has experienced a significant decline in its manufacturing sector due to a failure in industrial policy and the education system. Former Royal Dutch Shell CEO Peter Voser criticises the UK for neglecting its manufacturing sector, leading to a situation where a large number of graduates are opting for careers in professional services rather than manufacturing. This trend is seen as a policy failure, resulting in a shortage of skilled labour in the manufacturing sector and a lack of innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are crucial for economic growth. Voser emphasises the need for better technical training and a shift in focus towards apprenticeships to address these issues https://lnkd.in/eeNxxHPG South Africa faces similar challenges with its universities and the broader education system. Like the UK, South Africa has a significant number of graduates entering professional services rather than technical or manufacturing roles. This trend is partly due to the perception that professional services offer more prestigious and lucrative career opportunities. Additionally, South Africa's manufacturing sector also struggles with a shortage of skilled labour, which is exacerbated by an education system that does not adequately prepare students for technical and industrial careers. - According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for Q4 2023, South Africa's manufacturing sector employed 1,010,000 people, which is a decrease from previous quarters, indicating challenges in the sector https://lnkd.in/exURF4FE - The same survey highlights that the finance sector, which includes professional services, employed 1,662,000 people, showing a higher employment rate compared to manufacturing https://lnkd.in/exURF4FE - The 2023 Hiring Trends report also notes that South Africa has a critical skills shortage, which has led to international companies seeking South African talent, particularly in technical fields like IT and engineering https://lnkd.in/e6UjRaDb Both the UK and South Africa can work towards revitalising their manufacturing sectors and ensuring that their education systems better align with the needs of their economies. #ukmanufacturing #samanufacturing #industrialpolicy #educationreform #graduates #professionalservices #technicaltraining #apprenticeships #smes #economicgrowth #skillsshortage #automation #robotics #jobmarket #manufacturingsector #skillshortage #criticalskills
