𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐨'𝐬 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬: 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 #BurkinaFaso’s junta-controlled #NationalConference on the transition adopted a new charter extending #MilitaryRule until Jul #2029. The charter came into effect on 02 Jul and enabled key junta figures, including junta leader #IbrahimTraore, to run in the country’s next presidential and legislative #Elections. Traore seized power in a Sep 2022 coup, initially committed to the transition timeline set by former leader #PaulHenriSandaogoDamiba, planning for legislative and presidential elections by Jul 2024. According to the 2024 #Global Terrorism Index (GTI), Burkina Faso has experienced a 69% increase in terrorism-related fatalities. This indicates that terrorist operations have become more #Lethal, posing a significant threat to the country's #Security and #Stability. The #DeadliestAttack in 2024 was on 17 Feb, when an armed assailant ambushed at least 71 #BurkinabeSoldiers on the #Oursi and Deou axes in #Oudalan province. The #Islamic State claimed responsibility for the incident, which also resulted in three injuries and multiple abductions. The adoption of the charter solidifies military rule in Burkina Faso, signalling a harsher regime with increased #Crackdowns on #OppositionFigures. Despite provisions for elections before 2029, this is unlikely as Traore seeks to extend #MilitaryRule for a favourable election outcome. The junta’s abandonment of a civilian transition complicates ECOWAS’s efforts for Burkina Faso’s reintegration, as #ECOWAS is likely to demand a shorter transition timeline. The junta will likely continue aggressive #Counterinsurgency tactics, potentially increasing recruitment by terrorist groups such as #AlQaeda affiliate #JamaatNusratAlIslamwalMuslimin. No equivalence’: Biden defends Israel after #ICC requests arrest warrants. May 21, 2024. https://lnkd.in/eCNyZkdH #US president defended Israel against war crimes charges in the world’s top courts insisting Israel and Hamas cannot be compared. ** INDEED, there is no comparison: Israel's crimes are FAR WORSE than Hamas'. May 20, 2024. Jonathan Cook: https://lnkd.in/e3NK9SsJ Here's why: * Israeli war crimes have been ongoing for more than seven decades, long predating Hamas' creation. * Israel has kept the Palestinians of Gaza caged into a concentration camp for the past 17 years, denying them connection to the outside world and the essentials of life. Hamas managed to besiege a small part of Israel for one day, on October 7. * For every Israeli killed by Hamas on October 7, Israel has slaughtered at least 35 times that number of Palestinians. Similar kill-ratios grossly skewed in Israel's favor have been true for decades. * Israel has killed more than 15,000 Palestinian children since October – and many tens of thousands more Palestinian children are missing under rubble, maimed or orphaned. By early April, Israel had killed a further 114 children in the West Bank and injured 725 more. Hamas killed a total of 33 Israeli children on October 7. * Israel has laid waste to Gaza's entire health sector. It has bombed its hospitals, and killed, beaten and kidnapped many hundreds of medical personnel. Hamas has not attacked one Israeli hospital. * Israel has killed more than 100 journalists in Gaza and more than 250 aid workers. It has also kidnapped a further 40 journalists. Most are presumed to have been taken to a secret detention facility where torture is rife. Hamas is reported to have killed one Israeli journalist on October 7, and no known aid workers. * Israel is actively starving Gaza's population by denying it food, water and aid. That is a power – a genocidal one – Hamas could only ever dream of. * Israel has been forcibly removing Palestinians from their lands for more than 76 years to build illegal Jewish settlements in their place. Hamas has not been able to ethnically cleanse a single Israeli, nor build a single Palestinian settlement on Israeli land. * Some 750,000 Palestinians are reported to have been taken hostage and jailed by Israel since 1967 – an unwelcome rite of passage for Palestinian men and boys and one in which torture is routine and military trials ensure a near-100% conviction rate. Until October 7, Hamas had only ever managed to take hostage a handful of the Israeli soldiers whose job is to oppress Palestinians. * And, while Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by western states, those same western states laud Israel, fund and arm it, and provide it with diplomatic cover, even as the World Court rules that a plausible case has been made it is committing a genocide in Gaza.
The UN Security Council held an open session on Monday to discuss the situation in the Palestinian city of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Syed Ata Hasnain | How to stabilise, secure J&K for Assembly polls https://lnkd.in/gBrQwucX Having witnessed at least five elections in J&K plus the panchayat polls of 2011, I find myself reasonably qualified to comment on the ways elections have to be secured in conflict zones. Jammu and Kashmir is actually no longer a conflict zone....Yet every few months, a terrorist strike or a set of coordinated strikes by elusive terrorists. The Sri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY) is just about getting underway. It potentially offers the largest target for anti-national elements and over a sustained period of time. The J&K government knows how to secure it, but primarily in very conventional ways. What the Deep State across the border would be observing is the potential of the yatra, long a potential target, for something out of proportion. A secure and eventless yatra would be indicative of capability to ward off threats to the Assembly elections.

#Comment | As Pakistan gears up for elections, the political landscape is not only heating up but also becoming increasingly perilous! Mohsin Dawar, Chairman National Democratic Movement (NDM), and candidate for NA 40, recently faced a close call when his bulletproof vehicle was targeted in Tappi, North Waziristan by unidentified gunmen. The fortified car shielded him, but the incident has triggered a demand for urgent investigations and heightened security measures for candidates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The incident aligns with a surge in Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) activities, reminiscent of their actions in the early 2000s. This unsettling pattern is underscored by the deliberate targeting of schools in the KP province and the distressing discovery of six barbers' bodies in North Waziristan by unidentified individuals. Meanwhile, it is notable that the incident takes place when the visit of the Afghan Interim Government delegation, comprising 9-10 officials from the Afghan Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Information and Intelligence, led by Mullah Shirin Akhund, is visiting Pakistan. The visit involves bilateral talks, a joint meeting of the Pak-Afghan Joint Coordination Council, and discussions with Special Representative, Asif Durrani. Crucial issues on the agenda include addressing the use of Afghan territory by banned groups against Pakistan, tackling safe havens for terrorists in Afghanistan, and extradition demands for individuals like Hafiz Gul Bahadur. Additionally, discussions on visa-free transportation at the Chaman border will take place. As Pakistan grapples with internal security challenges, the negotiations involving issues like the use of Afghan territory by banned groups, terrorist safe havens, and extradition demands leave us pondering the web of geopolitics at play. Will these talks pave the way for a more secure future, or are we on the brink of more unexpected twists and turns in this saga of power, intrigue, and the quest for stability? Only time will reveal the answers to these pressing questions. #comment #southasia #update #pakistan #mohsindawar #afghanistan #ttp #geopolitics
