One may wonder, why, despite regulations like The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, of 2006, India ranks the highest in the world in the number of child marriages. In a refreshing twist, South Indian actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Mumbai-based businessman Nicholai Sachdev have embraced a new marital convention.   After their grand wedding in Thailand on July 2, Nicholai decided to add his wife's name to his own, becoming Nicholai Varalaxmi Sarathkumar Sachdev. This modern approach, where the husband takes the wife's name, symbolizes equality and mutual respect in marriage.   Historically, in India, the practice of a wife taking her husband's name began as a reflection of patriarchal norms. This custom reinforced male dominance and the idea that women were under the guardianship of male family members.   However, it’s heartening that many couples today are increasingly viewing marriage as a partnership of equals. In many Eastern cultures, it was customary for women to leave their homes as part of the wedding process. However, with changing times, customs and traditions must adapt, and China is no exception to this trend. This reflects a gradual shift in traditions as women and their families are no longer required to leave their homes and assume caregiving responsibilities. The concept of live-in son-in-laws is not only gaining popularity among women and their families but also among men. The agency facilitates the search for potential wealthy women for single men. However, individuals who are labeled "lazy" are discouraged from applying through this agency. The "live-in son-in-laws" are required to reside with the bride and her family. Specific qualifications include an annual income of at least Rs 12 lakh, a height requirement of 5 feet and 6 inches, and a clean record with no criminal history or tattoos. In this setup, it is emphasized that the children will adopt the surname of the wife to perpetuate her family lineage. This has been a longstanding tradition in Xiaoshan for decades, where parents of women are hesitant to allow their grandchildren to bear the surname of another family, as it signifies relinquishing their family wealth. The system is open to all couples residing in the prefecture, regardless of gender, and allows them to apply for public housing and consent to surgeries at prefectural hospitals, among other rights, by taking the oath. Governor Omura of Aichi Prefecture stated, "This marks a step towards building a society that respects human rights and recognizes diversity. We hope it will serve as a catalyst for change."
