How does mud become a valuable resource in decarbonising the construction sector? Here’s an easy read to get some quick insights on the role mud can play in climate action.
The growing trend of using sustainable building materials for construction is gaining traction due to their environmental, economic, and social benefits. In this article, WCC 2024 leader Rosie Paul highlights the significance and sanctity of rediscovering mud as a building material. Drawing a comparison with nature’s architects, such as ants and termites, she also discusses the practical advantages of mud in construction. As the co-founder and principal architect at Masons Ink Studio, Rosie specialises in earthen building technologies. Leaders like her are future-proofing our architectural and construction practices for a sustainable future. Reusing heritage properties has become more complex due to concerns about property protection and public safety, especially with respect to the increasingly stringent fire safety requirements in the National Construction Code (NCC). It can be challenging to retrofit fire safety measures that do not significantly alter the structure of heritage buildings. In a new White Paper from Promat Australia titled 'Fire Protection In Heritage Buildings: Navigating The Challenges of Adaptive Reuse' they examine the key challenges of making older buildings compliant to current fire safety regulations. Plans for the impending restoration of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) 66 Portland Place headquarters in London have become clearer with the release of an amended proposal outlining the scope of work for the new House of Architecture project. Benedetti Architects will head the project, which was awarded in 2022 following a brief competition. The anticipated £58.8 million project will provide complete accessibility throughout all 28 levels of the 90-year-old Art Deco skyscraper while replacing existing fossil fuel-dependent systems to reach a net zero goal. Since 1970, the original George Grey Wornum design has been protected under a historic Grade II classification. RIBA says: "[The] House of Architecture brings together three critical areas of our work that need investment, and will deliver on improvements that are fundamental to RIBA’s ongoing mission." https://lnkd.in/dN4hv8Ke

Plan Voisin was a proposal put forward by Le Corbusier, a pioneering modernist architect, in 1925. It was a bold urban plan designed to transform central Paris into a grid of skyscrapers and highways. Le Corbusier envisioned demolishing the historic city center and replacing it with rows of identical high-rise buildings surrounded by parks and transportation infrastructure. Le Corbusier exerted a strong influence on the urban planning concepts of the 1960s and 1970s, but was also rejected as a model of inhumane, schematic grid architecture.
