[Our own way 🙌] Acting for the community 🚢 Sully-Miller Contracting Co., a California-based Colas company, recently completed the Port of Los Angeles’ Wilmington Waterfront Promenade! Los Angeles has been working to revitalize the Wilmington neighborhood near the port for years. This waterfront park features a number of new amenities for the local community and is part of the city’s larger redevelopment program. Some notable features of the project: -Built on a 30-acre (around 12 hectares) brownfield site, -Required major earthworks to create a hill, -Involved the relocation of a road that now circles the park, -Included the construction of a pier, a playground and docks, in addition to a restroom facility built within the hillside featuring a “living roof” that reduces the overall hardscape footprint of the site while adding to its aesthetics. Of particular note, because the construction took place on the waterfront, teams had to adapt their schedules to the ocean tides to prevent the underground works from being flooded. The recent fire at Copenhagen's historic Børsen, which was preparing for its 400th anniversary, serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities these structures face during construction phases. VIDEO IN THE LINKED BLOG Historic buildings are particularly susceptible to fire during renovations due to aged materials and complex architectural features that differ from modern fire safety standards. Renovation often involves activities that increase fire risks, such as the use of open flames and electrical equipment in proximity to old and dry timber structures. It is imperative for fire safety professionals, building owners, and construction teams to prioritize fire risk assessments and implement stringent safety measures, including advanced fire detection systems and strict management of heat-producing work.
