When I am looking for candidates for high-level positions in manufacturing and engineering, I always look at their length of tenure at their past jobs. I also make sure to ask them what their motivation is for looking for a new job and leaving their current role. Motivators are important to the candidate and some motivations are stronger than others. It is important to understand their why. Relevant skills are also important. I have seen candidates with a work history in a different field do great in something new because there is relevance. Teachers can be great at marketing and admin and an array of other jobs because teaching calls for them to juggle many different skills. I have seen 911 operators do great in fast-paced manufacturing plants because they are used to talking to all different types of people in different roles. Sometimes you have to get creative and really look at a person's skill. Location is also important. Having experienced firsthand how a commute of an hour and a half or more can affect workflow and productivity, I make sure that people are comfortable with the commute and understand its distance. Additionally, I gauge their soft skills by discussing work ethic and leadership perspectives. I made the mistake of thinking that *not* everyone has to be like me. When hiring sales assistants - I thought - as long as they could do a good job they don’t need to share my passion and drive. 🤷Maybe it would’ve been okay if they’re happy staying in an entry-level position. 📈But for an employee to move on and grow with the company, they have to share my core values. When I first started hiring, I didn’t realize how crucial this is. Now, when I hire someone, for any position - even the janitor, I need to feel their passion. The proof is in the pudding: The woman who started as my executive assistant really understood me and proved to be so similar to me - she was quickly promoted to integrator. She runs the entire company. Of course, it’s important for employees to complement each other’s weaknesses. My integrator is definitely more systematic and organized than me, but she shares my drive, and can do attitude.
