🚀 Most startup founders make a critical hiring mistake... They craft their job descriptions (JDs) based on those from established companies. But startups aren’t established companies. We operate in a world of uncertainty, rapid change, and constant iteration. When you're hiring for a startup, you need people who are eager to figure things out, not those who have already figured it out. Look for candidates who: 🔍 Thrive in ambiguity. 💡 Are driven by curiosity. 🏃♂️ Are motivated by the challenge of creating something new. These are the people who will help you navigate the unpredictable journey of a startup and drive your vision forward. The right team can make or break your startup. Define what you truly need, not just what the standard JDs say you should need. #Startups #Hiring #Leadership #TeamBuilding #Entrepreneurship #Innovation

Finding the right talent for a startup is like navigating a minefield. Startups often lack brand recognition and can't compete with big company salaries and perks. Not everyone thrives in a fast-paced environment. Finding those who do is tough. Startups need jacks-of-all-trades. Specialists might struggle with wearing multiple hats. As your startup grows, scaling up without losing team cohesion is tricky. Example: We hired a great developer from a structured environment. Startup fluidity wasn’t a fit. A learning curve for us. So, I was invited by a startup to help them with hiring, leveraging my experience in startup talent management. During an interview, one of the hires said something that gave me a flashback to what Paul Graham once said. *Startups Don’t Die from Murder, They Die from Suicide* It’s a fancy way of saying that the biggest threats to startups often come from within. It’s not the big, bad competitors or the scary market conditions that usually take them down—it’s the internal chaos, poor decisions, and lack of focus. I’ve seen startups with great ideas and potential get their first seed funding, only to crash and burn faster. With more money, they can afford to hire more people, but often end up attracting those who are just in it for the job and salary, with no drive or desire to make a difference. These people just sit back and watch things go downhill. I’ve also witnessed two brilliant individuals, who were co-founders, destroy a promising company because their pride and egos were more important than the business. It’s a harsh reminder that internal dynamics can make or break a startup. What do you think are some of the internal factors that affect most startups? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. #startup #talentmanagement #chiefofstaff #strategicrecruitment

🚀 The Cost of Emotional Hiring: A Startup's Cautionary Tale 🤔 Let me share a story from my startup journey! 🌟 In the exciting but challenging world of startups, every choice we make matters. 💯 I learned this lesson the hard way when I hired someone I cared about, thinking it would be a great opportunity for them. 🤝 At first, everything seemed fine, but over time, they struggled in their role and ended up spreading negative rumors about the company. 😔 Trying to hurt our foundation in early stages. Before that, I brought in a close-knit team of friends, hoping for a supportive and collaborative environment. 👥 But when one of them was caught in some unethical behavior, it forced us to let go of the entire group. 💥 It was a situation that left our startup to ReFresh the staffing, which was the thing I wanted as I have realised the mistakes in initial hiring.🤦 What I realized after these set of incidents is : 1: Every hire is Crucial! 🚀 2: Your team can make or break your Company Culture. 🌈 3: Emotions can lead us to make choices that aren’t always best for the Business. ❌ 4: Instead, we need to focus on finding the Right People who fit our Vision and Values. 🔍 5: Remember, if you know you’re Right, No one can shake your Foundation with Wrong Comments about your Company. 💪 This has been a part of my Founder Journey—Every Setback is just a Fightback Waiting to Happen! 🔥❤️ #StartupSuccess #Leadership #HiringWisely #BusinessGrowth #Entrepreneurship #StartupLessons #TeamBuilding #CompanyCulture #EmotionalIntelligence #CareerAdvice #FounderLife #StrategicHiring #hiring #LearnFromMistakes #StartupJourney #InnovateAndLead

As a startup CEO, founder, or hiring manager - when do you ask a candidate about their compensation requirements? Surprising to me how many times the compensation discussion does not happen until the offer stage. Ask in the first interview whether it is an initial call or video or in person. It's on everyone's mind so get it out there early and work with it and on it or cut bait early. Check out my weekly email newsletter "Startup Hiring Success" for much more.
