Indonesia, holding over half the global market share in nickel as of 2023, has experienced a surge in nickel mining and production activities, causing a glut that decreased global prices. But this has led to unsustainable extraction rates, prompting the government to impose a moratorium on new processing facilities and request investment in High Pressure Acid Leach facilities for electric vehicle battery production. These strategies must balance economic growth, job creation and environmental sustainability.

Western media appears to keep blaming Indonesia and China’s strategy to hide the fact that there was a race for nickel and Indonesia won. Indonesia is able today to use what it was considering waste just two years ago (limonite) to produce MHP for batteries. So, while maintaining saprolite production for NPI and FeNi and even ramping it up, the massive investment in HPAL allows to do the same with limonite. Indonesia is the present of nickel. The next step will be, apart from the never ending growing, to be able to recycle dry stack from leaching to produce pig iron so HPAL recovery rate will move from 1 % to 37 %. Indonesia is the future of nickel. #indonesia #mining #wedabaynickel #iwip #tsingshan

Dr. Sebastian Kreft, Co-Founder of Metalshub, gave a statement to the Financial Times regarding the latest news around the spiked supply of low-cost nickel from Indonesia and Australian mining billionaire Andrew Forrest calling the London Metal Exchange to separate ‘clean’ nickel contracts. There has been rapid growth in the #nickel industry in Indonesia since 2019. Nickel is one of the key metals for electric car batteries and stainless steel production. While the transition to green mobility requires sustainable supply chains, sourcing nickel from Indonesia comes with high carbon emissions due to its reliance on coal-fired power. Sebastian suggests that separating ‘green’ and ‘dirty’ nickel on the #LME would go against recent demands to rebuild liquidity in the LME nickel contract following the nickel crisis in 2022. The LME expressed its support for the industry, highlighting that it has “several sustainability measures to ensure transparency throughout the supply chain” and that the discovery of a green premium should take place on physical trading platforms rather than the LME. The LME added that nickel sellers can already add #ESG credentials and carbon footprint information when offering material on the #Metalshub platform. Governments in the West are striving to secure supply chains essential for decarbonizing the global economy. Yet, in an ironic twist, Indonesia's coal-based nickel production could render half of the most eco-friendly mines unprofitable and force them to shut down. Indonesia now accounts for over half of the world's supply, with the potential to reach three-quarters of all production by the end of the decade. - Macquarie Group Ltd. estimates that around 250,000 tons of annual production, equivalent to roughly 7% of the total, have already been withdrawn from the market due to closures, with another 190,000 tons of planned production delayed. - Traditionally, nickel has been divided into two categories: low-grade for stainless steel manufacturing and high-grade for batteries. A massive Indonesian expansion of low-grade production led to a surplus, and, more crucially, processing innovations allowed that excess to be refined into a high-quality product. -Western miners are pinning their hopes on short-term state aid and a push towards customers like automakers, who demand "greener" nickel in the future and are willing to pay more for it. However, so far, nickel buyers are reluctant to pay extra. #nickel #decarbonization #supplychain #indonesia #ecofriendly #mining #automakers #industrialpolicy https://lnkd.in/egypFZj6

Indonesia is wiping out its competitors in the nickel industry in a remarkable way. Yet, here we have again another article calling Indonesian nickel “dirty”. On what basis exactly are western media allowing themselves to disrespect an entire country? Indonesia has it all, the largest nickel resources in the world and the industrial parks that go with it, the best people, with strong professionals and the willingness to grow, to accomplish miracles, to seize this amazing opportunity in the new age of metals, to not miss the train of the energy transition, to not let pass this chance of becoming a top 5 world economic power that is here now, in front of its doorstep. Indonesia can do it all: mining safely, with the highest standards in environment, social and governance, with the best, most cost-effective, most performant, fastest growing operations in the world. In fact, it is not that we can do it, but that we are already doing it. And to close this ridiculous discussion, we, in Weda Bay Nickel have committed to achieve IRMA 50 by the end of 2025. You can consider it set in stone. #mining #nickel #indonesia #wedabaynickel #sustainablemining

Indonesia Poised to Become a Global Price Setter for Mineral Commodities! Indonesia is rich in various commodities, including coal and tin. As the world's largest coal producer, the country has a significant presence in the global market. Holding company MIND ID, along with PT Timah Tbk, plans to utilize new technologies for tin processing in 2023. The state-owned mining holding company, PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (MIND ID), sees an opportunity for Indonesia to establish itself as a global price setter for mineral and coal commodities. MIND ID's CEO, Hendi Prio Santoso, aims for Indonesia to achieve this status in the near future. "We hope that soon we can become a global price setter. This is one of the main goals we are striving for within the MIND ID Group," Hendi stated in an official release on September 8, 2024. Despite being the largest coal producer in the world, Indonesia still relies on price indices from countries like Australia. Similarly, despite its vast tin reserves, Indonesia is not yet a global price setter for tin. Hendi suggests that Indonesia, along with other major producers like China and Peru, could adopt a price-setting model similar to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). MIND ID is proactively increasing exploration activities, both aggressively and selectively, to manage reserves optimally and meet global demand. The group is also enhancing its existing capabilities, expanding its downstream business, and promoting further industrialization to add more value to the minerals it manages. Additionally, MIND ID is actively building strategic alliances to expand its downstream business, which will strengthen Indonesia's position in the global supply chain. The company continues to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to establish strict national production quotas, which will serve as a benchmark for all mining industry players in Indonesia, ultimately helping the country set prices. **Mineral Reserves Management** MIND ID is also focused on optimizing mineral reserve management while adhering to sustainable mining principles. "Our efforts to become a market leader and global price setter will provide maximum benefits for the prosperity of all Indonesian people," Hendi concluded. Indonesia is here to stay, to rule the world’s nickel market. Instead of asking for protectionist measures or engaging in any market manipulation, instead of insulting what they don’t even know, Western players would be better off focusing on finding ways to collaborate with the new king of mining: INDONESIA! #indonesia #mining #wedabaynickel #sustainablemining #nickel
