Are you a book lover who knows the joy of reading? Do you believe that everyone should have access to quality books regardless of their background? If so, you'll be interested in the Library Management System, a project developed by Alfonce Morara, a software engineer at alx Africa. The Library Management System is a web and mobile-friendly platform that connects libraries with people in their communities. It seeks to keep track of books in the library and ensure swift running of operations. By facilitating peer-to-peer rentals, this project aims to make professional-grade equipment accessible and affordable for everyone. The website is fully functional and users can borrow and add books for others to borrow too. Alfonce Morara, the developer, is proud to have accomplished this project, although it wasn't without its challenges. He found it hard to eliminate duplicate entries for resources in the application, but throughout the project, he learned that familiarity with various APIs and data mapping methods is valuable. He believes that staying updated with the latest technologies and trends in the chosen field is crucial. As Alfonce Morara says, "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book to read." With the Library Management System, you can find the right book to read and share your thoughts with other book lovers. Check out the links below for more insights. Chief Testing and Quality Assurance Officer || Author, The First Software Testing Book In Africa - The ABC Of Software Testing || 4x Founder || I help businesses deliver quality-first applications || Career Coach
In barely 24 hours of putting out the announcement of the Tester's meet and greet, we recorded 100 signups. This is long overdue and like the tester's words, a quality event requires quality time and investment. Register via the link: https://lnkd.in/eia-WbAx This meetup is FREE, we aim to host 500 testers and one of our goals for this meetup is to reposition the importance of software testing into the cost of business growth and development. Register via this link: https://lnkd.in/eia-WbAx Surprisingly even within Nigeria, people's eye still lights up when I talk about software testing and it seems as though, we are talking about software testing but in the wrong circle and network. We still have businesses that chunk out solutions without an iota of deep software testing involvement. Register via this link: https://lnkd.in/eia-WbAx We will be hosting a panel session of founders who will be sharing with us how software testing has made their quality products stand out amidst the multiple competitors in the Nigerian market. Don't miss out on this Register via this link: https://lnkd.in/eia-WbAx

Week 7 update… Africa Agility Foundation #GITBootcampCohort7 Last week, we looked into Frontend tooling and package managers. A package manager is a tool that simplifies the process of managing and installing external libraries, frameworks, and dependencies required for a web application. It automates the retrieval, installation, and version control of these packages. This allows developers to focus on building their application rather than manually managing dependencies. Commonly used package managers in the front-end development ecosystem include npm (Node Package Manager), and Yarn. Package managers play a crucial role in managing these additional packages. They allow developers to easily add, update, or remove packages from their projects. For example, to add a package to a React project using npm (a popular package manager), you would use the following command: npm install package-name This command tells npm to download the specified package from the npm registry (a large software repository) and add it to the project's local package database. The package can then be imported and used in the project's code. #GITbootcamp #GirlsinTech #AfricaAgility #AfricanGirlsinTechBootcamp

Our next awesome video on getting started with Kùzu is out! Interoperability can mean a lot of things to users, so in this video, we focus on Kùzu's usability by constructing a graph using various data formats and our PostgreSQL extension. ✅ We demonstrate Kùzu's interoperability features for a data science workflow, using a graph-based product recommendation system as an example. ✅ We show how to ingest data from various formats like Parquet and CSV into Kùzu, transform it using Pandas DataFrames. ✅ We also showcase another great usability feature: relational database extensions, that allow you to scan and copy data directly from external relational databases. In this example, we will ingest data from a PostgreSQL database that contains tables of customers and the products they purchased, and combine it with the product data from the Parquet file to construct a customer purchase graph. ✅ The resulting graph can then be used to generate recommendations of products to customers. The workflow includes creating node and relationship tables, ingesting data, and augmenting the existing graph with data with useful metadata, such as historical sales of products. ✅ We then define some heuristics to generate recommendations based on added relationships, demonstrating that it's a breeze working with Kùzu when dealing with these various formats! If you want to follow along and reproduce the workflow, check out this GitHub repo: https://lnkd.in/dEE5y2GR Also, check out the docs page on more Kùzu extensions to scan/copy from relational databases (DuckDB, Postgres, SQLite, and more to come soon): https://lnkd.in/dBJBYHYp https://lnkd.in/dKDtuNYn

Why More African Software Engineers Need To Contribute to Open Source Projects | by Favour Ohanekwu === Open source software is everywhere — it has become the backbone of many technological advancements, driving innovation, reducing costs, and fostering collaboration across borders. However, despite its global reach, there remains a notable underrepresentation of African software engineers in the open-source community. GitHub’s “State of the Octoverse” in 2021 showed that Africa has only 2.3% of the active users (users making active contributions) on Github compared to, for example, North America, which has 31.5% of the contributions. The Sustain Africa 2023 Community Report by Open Source Community Africa is out. This working group was facilitated by me (Open Source Data Science) The goal was to discuss: - How to make open-source in the data space sustainable. - What does sustainability mean in the data space? The Sustain Summit is a one-day conversation for open-source software (OSS) sustainers where we talk about Sustainability—the sustainability of resources and people. The conversation around a comprehensive overview of how FOSS (free and open source software) is developed, maintained, and utilized and providing a roadmap for solving the cultural, financial, and institutional issues among open-source project maintainers continues to be the focus of Sustain.
