I always dreamt about designing an electric motor and today, thanks to the Motorvehicle University of Emilia Romagna (MUNER), I took a first step completing the exam project of the Electric Motor Design course hold by Professor Giacomo Sala. The project consists in the preliminary design of a grid fed #IM and of an inverter-controlled #SPM motor. Both constrained and unconstrained design approaches have been covered, and the designs are validated through #FEMM and #FluxMotor. I have analyzed all the design aspects with a particular attention on the physical motivation of torque harmonics, radial forces generation and on the magnetic flux inside the slots.

There are most of the AT-X models, from -1 to -14, that we evaluated in Aermacchi for the MB-339 replacement between 1985 and 1995. We performed many trade-offs: canard vs aft-tail, single vs. twin engine, transonic vs. supersonic optimization, different planforms and profiles, cabin layouts, systems architectures... many of these trade offs were supported by wind tunnel tests in our facilities and at Calspan. Eventually we concluded that the best configuration for an advanced trainer woul be a conventional aft tail optimized for the transonic regime, and that a twin engine configuration, albeit slightly more expensive, would have significant advantages in redundant systems architecture and therefore in flight safety, of paramount importance for a trainer. all these studies were subsequently fed into the Yak/Aem program (which was truly a 50/50 effort ia all disciplines) and eventually in the M-346 design.

When difficult-to-detect workpieces (curved, glossy, or matt surfaces) cannot be detected correctly, sensors need to be reselected or adjusted. The E3AS Series provides reliable detection with less effect of curved, glossy, or matt surfaces, reducing design and commissioning time. With the line beam of the E3AS-HL Sensor, detection is less affected by the profile of the surface since the reflected light reaches the sensor from any part of the surface. Introducing my recent project: the 'Wired Buzzer Circuit.' This innovative design features LEDs, a buzzer, and push buttons. The buzzer, powered by electrical pulses, transforms energy into sound waves, delivering synchronized auditory alerts. Additionally, the push buttons activate specific functions, enabling user interaction and control. Refer to the video below for a demonstration.

Noise and vibration analysis in electric motors is deemed critical as it allows for the optimization of motor performance by identifying and addressing noise and vibration issues, thereby ensuring smooth and efficient operation. Furthermore, understanding and mitigating noise and vibration problems early in the design process are believed to enhance the quality and reliability of electric motors, resulting in more durable products that meet standards and customer expectations. Radial force harmonics are recognized as one of the main sources of noise and vibration in electric machines, emphasizing the importance of studying their pattern and their impact on the acoustic noise and vibration of the motor. In our latest paper, we studied and compared three different motor topologies, including interior permanent magnet motor (IPM), induction motor (IM), and switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives, by focusing on their radial force harmonics. For this purpose, we derived the patterns for dominant radial force harmonics of the studied motors based on motor parameters. Additionally, a thorough acoustic noise analysis was conducted, exploring the correlation between the peaks in the sound pressure level waveforms of the motors, natural frequencies, and dominant radial force harmonics.
