The Importance of Voting: A Key Pillar of Democracy by Ralph de la Vega The right to vote is a key pillar of democratic principles. A recent Pew Research Center study estimates that 36.2 million Latinos are eligible to vote in 2024, up from 32.3 million in 2020. This makes Hispanics the largest eligible voting minority group in the U.S. and represents 50% of the total growth in eligible voters during this time. However, not all eligible voters register to vote, and in presidential elections, turnout rates among Hispanic Americans have typically been lower than those of other groups. In a democratic society, the power to shape the future rests with its citizens, with voting being the most direct form of participation. For minority groups, registering and voting are critical tools for advocating their rights, interests, and the issues that disproportionately affect them. Representation in government at all levels, local, state, and federal, is crucial. Elected officials decide on various issues, from education and healthcare to immigration and the economy. When minority voices are underrepresented in the electoral process, their needs and concerns may not be addressed. By registering and voting, minority communities can elect representatives who reflect their demographics and understand their unique experiences and challenges. Breaking News from Somos PAC: Today, as first reported by The New Republic, Somos PAC released the results of a recent poll commissioned by Somos PAC & conducted by BSP Research to measure battleground state Latino voter support for Kamala Harris. This is the largest polling of battleground Latino voters to come out measuring Latino voter support for the current presidential nominees, Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.   The results found that since joining the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris has solidified a strong lead among Latinos voters in key battleground states against opponent Republican Donald Trump and has a clear path to earn the support of an even larger share of Latino voters. Increased approval ratings and increased enthusiasm among Latinos higher among women and younger Latinos. Key insights from this week’s 2024 National Latino Weekly Tracking Poll highlight the dynamics shaping the 2024 Presidential race among Latino voters: 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗲: • Kamala Harris leads with 56% support (holding steady). • Donald Trump follows with 33% support (consistent with last week). 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺: • Trump's favorability improved to 40% favorable (56% unfavorable). • JD Vance saw a rise to 33% favorable (46% unfavorable). 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗩𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 (𝟭𝟴-𝟮𝟵):  • Young Latino men favor Trump at 53%. • Young Latina women prefer Harris at 60%. 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗩𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: • 52% of Latino voters have been contacted by political parties. • Democrats reached 57% (down from 66%). • Republicans reached 47% (up from 41%). Vote. #VOTACONMIGO Nearly three-quarters of Latino voters say they are "almost certain" they'll vote in November, according to an August poll by the Hispanic Federation and Latino Victory, two civic engagement organizations. Enthusiasm and motivation surged after Harris took over the ticket, the poll showed. In the poll, which surveyed 600 Latino registered voters nationwide, 59% of respondents said they intended to vote for Harris, versus 35% for Trump.  A separate August poll by Univision, which surveyed 1,100 Latino registered voters nationwide, pinned her support slightly lower: 53% for Harris versus 38% for Trump. https://lnkd.in/e5sGQ2zS

"Hispanics are the second largest group of voting age Americans and a critical factor in the race for the White House, Congressional balance of power, and beyond. Yet, oversimplifications and mistaken assumptions about these voters persist. In a landscape of close elections, Hispanic voters are difference-makers, and are putting an exclamation point on the need for parties and candidates to meaningfully engage them and respond to their priorities, which are topped by cost of living, jobs, housing, and gun safety concerns." Janet Murguía, President and CEO, UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS) Key findings include: Four of the top five concerns for Hispanic voters are dominated by economic and pocketbook issues – specifically, inflation and the rising cost of living, jobs, healthcare and housing affordability. Notably, housing rose to the top five concerns as a stand-alone for the first time. Gun violence remained among the top five, doing so for the first time in 2022. On abortion: By a 71% to 23% margin, Latinos continue to oppose efforts to make it illegal or take that decision away from others, no matter their own personal beliefs on the issue. On immigration: While not in the top five priority issues, immigration is ranked higher than it was in 2022. Top action items include providing a path to citizenship for long-residing undocumented individuals and Dreamers; the lowest support of any issue in the battery is for finishing the wall or mass deportations. On climate: Latino voters think climate action is urgently needed to forestall weather and climate related catastrophes.
