Historic England’s Post

Founded by the Romans in AD 71 and later shaped by the Vikings and Normans, York’s cobbled streets and ruined remains offer a unique glimpse into England’s past. Many of the buildings on Stonegate, photographed here around 1853, were built in the medieval period. Discover 10 historic places to explore in York ➡️ bit.ly/HistoricPlacesYork

I wonder what kept these houses moving into the future? Some towns still have their old origins of buildings built in the medieval days and even the Roman cities, like Bath and the villages around them, all built in the famous Bath stone. The romans had a network of central heating pits, normally built in and around an extinct volcano, they were the first civilisation to use under floor heating by flooding the bottom of their homes already build with channels and waterproofed to collect the hot seismic water from the volcanic lakes. We are starting to use this kind of heating again, as global warming is part of the reason behind it, using the natural waters around somewhere like Bath. It does seem though, that places that are surrounded by water running underground through the streets, e.g. Frome in Somerset and Midsomer Norton in Somerset, have kept their charm of buildings and layout because the river runs so close by, and people found it easier to live there due to the amenities being on the door step.

We need to stop the March of modernity and ugly architecture! I can't stand that cold, soulless gerkin type garbage! You can find it anywhere! Love heritage, we need preservation and proper zoning to protect the historic landscape

When I look at History and photos like this, I keep expecting to see Charles Laughton (Hobsons Choice) wobbling out of the doorway, or falling down a basement store room lol, Great Picture and even had a Public Library so was 17th Century, with public library act coming out in 1850.
