As a first generation college graduate I can say that it isn’t easy to break down barriers and limitations that come with not having a college degree. Even thought I wouldn’t say that having a degree makes you automatically have a job, the process of going through college opens up your mind beyond what you was taught at home. You make a decision on what you will do with your life. That’s what being a first generation college graduate can do for you.
🎉 Happy First Generation College Celebration Day! 🎓 Today, we celebrate the incredible achievements of first-gen college students and their journeys toward success. At COOP, we’re dedicated to empowering these trailblazers by providing them with skills and connections they can leverage to overcome underemployment and thrive in their careers.

Today is National First-Gen College Student day! Shoutout to Shubitha Kever for putting together a wonderful staff training and celebration this week at PFW. 🥳 As a first-gen graduate myself, please be sure to celebrate those students in your own life. Here's some info! While 54% of students are first-gen nationally, only 20% graduate and 28% are over 30 years old. Common characteristics: • Curiosity & Creativity • Resilience & Independence (even at a fault) • Resourcefulness and high relational currency • High Context Individuals Common barriers: • Limited knowledge of campus resources and less likely to seek advising or health services • More likely to need to work fulltime and to have children • 'Breakaway guilt' due to upward mobility within their family • Lower socioeconomic background, entrance exams, and access to basic needs • Limiting beliefs, anxiety, burnout First-gen means that neither of your parents obtained a 4-year degree. Are you first generation?

Career talk with 4th-8th graders from Socorro ISD was a success! What was made clear is that it’s crucial to start discussing the range of opportunities available to students, especially in fields that will be vital in the coming decades. Given the rapidly evolving job market, especially with the rise of green jobs and roles focused on climate and sustainability, it’s clear that today’s students need to be aware of these emerging fields. The workforce of the future will not only require technical expertise but also a broad range of skills and perspectives, including those focused on thought leadership, policy, and justice. Integrating discussions about climate and technology careers into career showcases can help prepare students for these future opportunities. It’s also essential to emphasize the importance of diversity in these fields, as marginalized communities often face the greatest challenges from climate change and thus have a vital role in shaping solutions and policies. After Saturday's career showcase, it was made apparent that Peek Counsel can play a pivotal role in developing a climate career pipeline for students in our community, for our voices are needed more than ever in those spaces.

What advice would you give to a Year 12 student about preparing themselves for the future?
Last week the Haileybury Careers team hosted the inaugural Future Ready Festival for our Senior School students. The Future Ready Festival connected students with industry experts, representatives from the Old Haileyburians Association (OHA), and tertiary institutions to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in an increasingly complex and competitive world. Students heard personal career narratives from OHA representatives, learned about various study areas, and explored emerging industry trends. These insights were invaluable for our students. The Future Ready Festival inspired our students to embrace new opportunities and look forward to their futures with confidence.

Here's How: These graduates are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and neighbors. Their success extends beyond them and into their families. That’s why we calculate that for every graduate who enters a new career, 2.5 more people are lifted out of poverty as a by-product. Here’s to a new chapter(:
🌟 Please join us in welcoming Jasmyn Robinson, M.Ed. to JCU! 🌟 Jasmyn is originally from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, but came to Ohio in 2017 to go to Kent State University. She received her Bachelor's degree in psychology in 2021, making her the first in her family to obtain a degree. After a year off of school working as a registered behavioral technician, Jasmyn decided it was time to go back to get her Masters degree. She was accepted into the Kent State Higher Education and Administration program in 2022 and started as a Graduate Assistant in the Career Exploration and Development office, where she had the opportunity to provide career advising and teach a course called Career Navigation. Her second year in the program, she had another opportunity to be a Graduate Assistant for Student Success Programs. Jasmyn is grateful for all the experiences she had at Kent State, as well as all the wonderful people who have helped her along the way. She believes all her experiences have led her here to JCU, and she is thrilled to be here! Jasmyn's new role at JCU is as an Academic Success Advisor for the Boler College of Business. She is really looking forward to working with the first- and second-year students and helping them feel comfortable and confident in their educational journey here at JCU. Being her first week, she still has a lot to learn, but everyone has been so welcoming and helpful that it makes her excited to see what is in store for her career here at John Carroll University! #newhire #welcome #employeeonboarding
