I've recently worked on a study that relied heavily on old newspapers, which perfectly ties into my new blog series (which will be published soon!) Working with such old documents is so interesting because you have to work harder to research and find contextual information and because terminology has shifted since the original publication date. Plus printed media was much scarcer when these old newspapers were being published. I'm proud of my research skills and perseverance after working with these documents because sometimes it takes a really long time to find that term or figure out that abbreviation. Take this newspaper, Umm Al-Qura. In the footnotes, the study's author used the abbreviations ع87، س2: I figured ع referred to عدد (as in Issue No.), but I couldn't figure out what س was for the longest time. It wasn't until I tracked down an issue in an archive, where I could clearly see the frontpage, and see that س was سنة. Do you have experience working with material like this? What are your tricks?
