ABB has partnered with BHP to enhance mining efficiency at the Jansen potash project in Saskatchewan, Canada, by providing and commissioning three state-of-the-art friction hoists. Among these, one holds the distinction of having the world's largest capacity, revolutionizing mining technology. This groundbreaking hoist can transport payloads up to 75 tonnes at a speed of 18.3 meters per second, powered by dual 7,700 kW motors, showcasing the future of mining operations. In 2023, Canada exported pulley tackle and hoists powered by electric motors valued at USD 15.2 million, while the import figures stood at USD 103.7 million. This highlights Canada's crucial role in the global hoisting equipment market, with predominant import partners being Mexico, the United States, and Germany. The United States remains the top market for Canadian exports, accounting for just over USD 14.5 million, with Australia and Ireland following closely. The Jansen project is on its way to becoming the largest potash mine in the world. Stage 1 is expected to achieve an annual capacity of 4.5 million tonnes, with further phases set to elevate this figure significantly. Impressively, the project is currently ahead of schedule, with the initial production anticipated to commence in two years. Bjorn Jonsson, global business line manager for hoisting at ABB Process Industries, emphasized that ABB's hoists set the standard for safety and capacity, meeting the industry's demands for enhanced productivity and safety. Brazilian mining company Samarco, a joint venture between Vale and BHP, has announced plans to invest over $1 billion to restore its iron ore production capacity to 26 million tons/year—the full pre-2015 level—by January 2028. 🔹 Current Progress: Operations gradually resumed five years ago following the 2015 dam collapse. The company has restored 60% of its capacity and is now activating its second beneficiation plant and a new tailings filtration plant. 🔹 2023 Developments: The Samarco Board approved plans to: Restart the second pelletizing plant and expand the existing filtration plant. Increase mining fleet capacity. Produce 15 million tons of iron ore pellets by 2025 (up from an estimated 9 million tons in 2024). IHC Mining’s Consultancy team in the Netherlands recently completed a dredging study for Rio Grande Mineração’s (RGM) Retiro Mineral Sands Project in Brazil. The study focussed on the dredge mining component of the project and involved the design and planning of potential dredging scenarios, equipment selection, and cost estimation, all of which are essential inputs for project evaluation, ultimately with the goal of supporting a viable operation. As the Retiro project is advancing, it was important to get a good understanding of the site and characteristics of the orebody. For this particular operation our electrically driven Cutter Suction Dredgers (CSD) are the preferred choice to navigate the specific soil conditions, effectively addressing the shallow depths of the deposit and meeting the project’s high throughput requirements. The study advised on the optimum scenario for these mining dredgers, in combination with the client’s Wet Concentrator Plant, offering RGM a strategic advantage ensuring operational stability and maximising ore recovery.
