Joining forces to create strong and viable ecosystems was the overarching theme at the Nordic Hydrogen Week in Oulu, where Karoliina has held the Bergmann flag high these past days. From research on photocatalytic hydrogen and steel-making to exciting new investments, the great talks and even greater company prove that the molecule keeps on gaining momentum. The final touch of concreteness was the field tour to the port and prospective new project sites today. One key observation to be made from the conversations during the week is that as the hydrogen phenomena moves from ideas to actions, it is no longer only understanding that must be developed but also the concrete contractual and conceptual frameworks that can support the value chain. #northernpoweroulu #Both2niaOulu

Supporting Strategic Innovation It was good to see Simon Wilson in the Herald today noting EMROD as one of the good things to happen in and/or from Aotearoa in 2023. He notes that Emrod “is one of several companies supported by Ara Ake, the ‘future energy centre’ set up in Taranaki by the previous Government”. The team at Ara Ake, now also with staff in Te Whanganui a Tara and Tamaki Makaurau, has developed real skills in when and how to best support early commercialisation of new energy projects. These activities are not party political, they are part of being a long term smart economy. Innovation needs such support, but it must be sustained, skilled, disciplined and well directed to future economic need. Ara Ake is working with a wide range of energy innovators (supply and demand) from small community activity to initiatives with much wider potential. This is about working with the energy markets to address blockages or obstacles to progress and success. #energyinnovation

This initiative is a key step towards reducing carbon emissions in line with global climate policies. HyChem's Role: At HyChem, we are housing one of the key demonstrators of the CAPTUS project at our industrial plant in Póvoa de Santa Iria, Portugal. The demonstrator D2 will showcase the use of CO2 capture technology, rich-lipid microalgae cultivation in closed photobioreactors (PBRs), and the conversion of these algae into high-energy content bio-oils. This process not only leverages our chemical plant’s emissions for microalgae growth but also aids in producing biofuels and green chemical products, marking a significant step in the development of biorefineries. Our role involves developing and demonstrating a novel technology at TRL7, which transforms CO2 from chemical industry emissions into liquid bio-oils, a form of renewable energy. This process combines the cultivation of microalgae using conditioned CO2 with hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) to generate bio-oils from the algae. Leading the D2 demonstration, A4F is at the forefront of the technology development for the microalgae production system, including the engineering and installation of the photobioreactors (PBRs). As you most probably have seen in the news, about a month ago, the Region of Thessaly in Greece was hardly hit by climate change, with severe amounts of rain falling into a very short timeframe and many people hit by the events. We, at BECoop, know well the Region with our pilot ESEK SYN PE being located in its heart, in Karditsa. BECoop team had a meeting planned in Karditsa in September and was heavily moved by the situation. After thorough discussions, the consortium decided to maintain (yet adapt) the field visits, considering that this trip could also support the communities impacted by the situation. We had the opportunity to visit the facilities of our partner ESEK and discover a mountain eco village where heat is provided through biomass, as well as experience the welcoming and kind heart of the local population. We wanted to share with you today two videos produced after this trip: 🌲 One allows you to discover the inspiring story of the Energy Community of Karditsa (ESEK), a pioneering citizen energy community, through the eyes of the ESEK team.
