Environment America is hiring campaign associates to work in locations across the country on our campaigns to defend our oceans and public lands, to advocate for clean energy solutions and to campaign for clean air and clean water. Here are some of the things our associates do: Work with coalitions to create shared campaign strategy and demonstrate support for our campaign goals. Organize events and work with volunteers: Organize webinars, community events and public meetings. Recruit organizations and members of the public to attend and participate. Earn traditional media and social media attention: Organize media events and write opinion pieces. Build a following on social media for your campaign. Lobby elected officials: Coordinate strategy with champions in Congress or in State Houses. Make a convincing case to legislators who are undecided on a particular vote. When a critical vote is happening on your campaign, work to demonstrate the support you’ve been building on the ground to help line up the votes needed to win. Recruit new people: Help build your team by recruiting volunteers, interns and full-time staff. Run a grassroots campaign office each summer to raise money to support our campaigns, build our organization and membership, and help build critical and timely grassroots support to win key campaigns while honing your organizing and management skills. On newsroom diversity Have you ever wondered why some news stories resonate with you more than others? It might be because the person telling the story understands your perspective firsthand. This is why newsroom diversity is so crucial. It's not just about ticking boxes; it's about enriching our storytelling and making sure we're truly representing all voices in our society. Let me share a bit about my experience at TheCable where I'm currently the Assistant News Editor. We're lucky to have a diverse team, including a colleague with a disability. His presence has greatly impacted how we cover stories about persons with disabilities. Why? Because he brings his lived experiences to the table. He knows the challenges, the triumphs, and the everyday realities that many of us might overlook. When he writes about accessibility issues or disability rights, there's an authenticity and depth to the stories that we simply couldn't achieve without his insight. This got me thinking: how many other perspectives are we missing in our newsrooms? In Nigeria, and indeed globally, our societies are incredibly diverse. We have different ethnic groups, religions, social classes, and abilities. Shouldn't our newsrooms reflect this diversity? When we have reporters from various backgrounds, we: - uncover stories that might otherwise go untold - bring nuanced understanding to complex issues - challenge our own biases and assumptions - build trust with communities that often feel misrepresented in the media But diversity isn't just about hiring. It's about creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to share their unique perspectives. It's about actively seeking out and amplifying diverse voices. At TheCable, we're always working to improve in this area. We're actively seeking out journalists from underrepresented groups and creating mentorship programmes to nurture diverse talent. I believe that as journalists, we have a responsibility to reflect the societies we serve. By building diverse newsrooms, we're not just improving our journalism – we're contributing to a more understanding and inclusive world. What are your thoughts on this?
