Here are some engaging ways to prioritize physical wellness with children: 1. Take a Walk: Sometimes, the simplest activities can have the biggest impact.  2. Create Active Sensory Spaces: By integrating movement into the classroom or play area, children can enhance their motor skills and cognitive development while having fun. 3. Explore Various Sports and Activities: From traditional team sports like soccer and basketball to individual pursuits like yoga or dance, exposing children to movement experiences fosters physical literacy and encourages a lifelong commitment to staying active. By embracing these strategies, we can empower children to prioritize their physical wellness, setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits and positive well-being.

Happy Spring Break! LAUSD schools will be closed March 25-29 (Spring Break) and April 1 (Cesar Chavez Birthday Observed). During this break, I invite you to engage in some Forest Bathing. In the 1980s, Japan proposed a program called shinrinyoku, or forest bathing, to help people living in densely populated urban areas reset and recharge. How it works: go out into a natural setting and use all of you senses to mindfully observe and immerse yourself in the surroundings. Some research studies found this practice may help to reduce anxiety, improve mood, and counterbalance mental fatigue. Forest Bathing has been one of the many practices in our Wellness for Administrators and Wellness for Teachers courses and over the past 3 years, over 2,000 participants have engaged in this practice. This is one of the favorite wellness practices and participants reported a higher sense of calmness, gratitude, and decompression. Last week, my kids’ school put on a free wellbeing talk for parents with the amazing Jacqui Jones, author of The Greatfulness Guide. I loved it, and valued the tips on gratitude, mindfulness and more. But… only a handful of other parents showed up. The feeling was that everyone is so exhausted & busy right now that they –ironically - couldn’t muster up the energy to attend a Wellbeing talk. I see the same thing happening in workplaces. The grand plans we made for the year back in January and February have been replaced by, ‘can we just get this year over with?!’. In June! This is what we normally see by November or December. To break this cycle, you need to get off the racetrack and take a ‘pit stop’ - a phrase I learned from David Roddick, to describe a team offsite. In a pit stop, you stop the wheels spinning and take time to reflect, reconnect and re-energise. You get back onto the track with new tyres, a full tank of gas, and more likely to win the race. I believe teams should do this every quarter. Let’s call that a 3 pit stop strategy for April, July and October. If you don’t do this, your team is likely to lose speed, burst a tyre, or spin off the track. High performance teams, like high performance cars, need time off the racetrack. Image credit: Dall-E

This semester we are running several concurrent cohorts of our Weekly Wellness series--a 5 week journey towards greater wellbeing and sustainability. Our self-exploration is centered on the 4 Pillars of Wellness (Physical, Mental, Emotional and Social) and each participant has chosen an area of focus to gain better balance and deeper intentionality in service to the rest and greater good of the whole. At least half of the group have prioritized their Physical wellbeing as a premier focus, and more specifically moving the body or exercise. One of the biggest barriers faced in achieving that was that ol' nemesis TIME. We know we can't control father Time, but we can make small but mighty shifts to use our time in ways that nourish and sustain. 15 minutes is a GREAT start. Even if you just walk around the playground on campus during supervision, or take a lap through the halls before the school day starts, it counts and it all adds up!
