When I was a senior in high school, I dunked a basketball in my high school gymnasium, on a 10ft rim. It wasn’t super spectacular, but it was, nonetheless, a dunk. Unfortunately, nobody saw it, and for whatever reason, I never got the opportunity to do it again. But because nobody saw it, a lot of people didn’t believe that it had happened, including my dad and my older brother, The logic went, “We are both taller than you, and we cannot dunk, therefore you could not have dunked.” In other words, “We could not do it, therefore you could not have done it.” There’s just one problem… I KNOW that I did it. I’m as sure as I’m telling this story right now. Are there people in your life who are telling you that you can’t do something, or succeed at something because they weren’t able to? Are there people in your life who you are saying won’t succeed because you couldn’t? I’m going to say the same thing here as I’ve told my students from time-to-time, who have heard this story: Just because somebody else doesn’t succeed, or wasn’t able to do something, doesn’t automatically mean that you can’t. Are there rules and regulations and policies and challenges to consider? Of course there are. But with exception to those, we get to decide what we succeed at and what we don’t, nobody else. AND, even with those challenges, it’s up to us to figure out how we’re going navigate them. Go get ‘em, Tiger! The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and prominent conferences have recently submitted a comprehensive agreement to settle multiple antitrust lawsuits, paving the way for a revolutionary model that includes athlete revenue sharing, enhanced scholarships, and a groundbreaking enforcement system overseen by the courts. This innovative model is set to take effect in the 2025-2026 season, providing approximately 790 new scholarship opportunities across over 40 NCAA sports. Under this new framework, institutions can offer scholarships to all athletes on a team's roster, up to newly established limits. Football programs will benefit from a 20-scholarship increase, while baseball will see a significant boost of 22.3 scholarships. My earliest football memory dates back to my primary school days. I vividly recall watching the boys play during lunchtime while us girls were denied participation with the dismissive notion that football was exclusively for boys. Frustrated by this inequality, I voiced my concerns to a teacher who, thankfully, devised a brilliant solution. Implementing a rotating schedule, the girls were granted exclusive access to the football cage on designated days. As we enthusiastically played and showcased our skills, the boys observed from the sidelines, eventually extending invitations for joint games so desinated days were no longer required. This transformative experience not only ignited my lifelong passion for football but also highlighted the power of inclusive leadership. The teacher's innovative approach fostered unity, breaking down gender barriers and paving the way for enduring friendships and shared experiences. Over the next two decades, football remained a central aspect of my life, affording me opportunities to compete against formidable opponents and witness the burgeoning recognition of women's football on a global scale. Reflecting on this journey, I'm reminded of the profound impact one individual's actions can have in catalyzing positive change. As we celebrate progress in sports inclusivity, let's continue championing diversity and empowering future generations to pursue their passions unencumbered by societal norms. Basketball is literally a living part of me! At this point in my life, the piece that makes me love it even more is when I can share my basketball experiences with young people for the purpose of showing them that this sport is bigger than the game. So much of basketball offers a cheat sheet for navigating the complex journey we all know as life. This past week I had the honor of reconnecting with Sonia Chase to work at her Nike basketball camp in Baltimore, Maryland. I first worked with Sonia Chase more than ten years ago. It was then that I realized her camps are different ON PURPOSE! Growing as a person alongside basketball development has always been, and continues to be, a foundation of all of Sonia's camps. I genuinely appreciate this! Over the course of camp, I led two workshops with the campers : 1) Character Development and 2) Peace Building. Who you are and how you treat people matters so much more than what you can do with a basketball. It is critical for children to know this and to practice it in everyday interactions. Take a look at one of the videos that recaps what the campers actually got out of the Peace Building workshop. We talked about the importance of depositing peace - through appreciation - into others' lives exactly how you would want someone to do it for you. Showing appreciation is HUGE because it is SELFLESS!!! I am proud of their responses because I did not coach them on what to say. I simply asked them to repeat what they shared so that I could catch it in a video. Young people are amazing to me, and their responses largely capture why I choose to remain in education. BOUNDARIES is one of the most vital values and skills we can teach to and model for our employees (and our children). In the youth sports world, things have gotten a bit crazy! There are no boundaries anymore. There are no seasons. There is not a solid stop signaling the end of one sport and the beginning of another. This lack of boundaries is also incredibly common in the business world. When are we going to start valuing solid boundaries between our work and non-work lives? Here's the issue with #NIL, is it a concession to create a distraction or delay addressing the core issue? what's the core issue? Athletes still aren't being paid from earn revenues from the schools, right? My wife and I are raising two boys and we continue to talk about the responsibility to first and foremost raise humans, not just "boys." One way we do this is by supporting, celebrating, cheering, and talking about female athletes and researchers working in the outdoor space. We cheer louder for our female teammates at races, and follow women's mountain bike racing even closer than the men's races. We celebrate the female conservationists and aspiring scholars we get to work with at the University.    Women are underrepresented in the environmental fields and outdoor recreation, and over two-thirds of women have reported harassment or other forms of discrimination while recreating. We need more women on bikes not just because it is good for women (but that should be enough of a reason). It is essential for boys to see and celebrate women for their athletic accomplishments or scholarly pursuits instead of the other ways they are socially conditioned to celebrate women. More women on bikes (or hikes, or in research fields, etc.) the better off we ALL are.
