If someone new comes across your website and they are looking for professional help, then they have to feel like they already know what it's like to work with you based on how they feel when they're on your website. You don't just want to hear "You're the first therapist I saw when searching Google". A good website builds trust and credibility to your name before people even know anything about you, and it brings in a lot more clients! Therapists, is your branding costing you clients? Let me tell you a story. I am a paying therapy client. When I went looking for my first therapist, I scoured the internet. I combed through PsychologyToday, picked out a handful of therapists, and then went through each therapist's website. The cool, head-shaven chick with incredible branding, lots of photos, and tons of information on her website? Waitlist. Figures. The great fit for me with yet another beautiful set of branding and a color palette that delighted me? Not accepting new clients at this time. The good fit for me with a beige-and-white website with very little information and a logo of a tree? Immediate openings, but I could probably find a better fit. See, in the competitive space of therapy and mental health services, effective branding is not just a luxury-- it's a necessity. I've seen many of my clients underestimate the power of a unique brand that is tailored to who they really are. Their minds are blown when they discover that a unique brand = higher-paying, longer-lasting clients of their own. That's because when a potential client sees branding that aligns with them and their values, they are more likely to believe that therapist will be the perfect fit for them. When they are able to see a part of themselves reflected back at them, they become more confident about inquiring. Ultimately, I ended up going with that first option and sitting on her waitlist for a long time. I was willing to do it because she felt like the perfect fit-- her values aligned with mine, I personally thought her branding was awesome, which made me think she was probably awesome, too. And she was! I ended up being her therapy client for three years, and in that time, her practice gained a second therapist and she increased her prices twice. Why most therapists' websites fail, and by fail I mean don't generate clients for them... - The site doesn't appeal on an emotional level to the client. Most people requiring therapy are in a state of fear and unease so need to feel trust and friendliness first and foremost. - Many therapists sites are just a description of the service they offer, which isn't going to make the potential client get in touch. Clients need to see the transformations they can undergo, the difference that can be made. - They only use directories to promote the website, this isn't enough it won't generate enough traffic to get you enough enquiries - They don't use SEO to get listed in Google local. this is actually relatively easy for therapists compared to a lot of sectors so well worth doing The rewards of getting it right can be tremendous. A few weeks ago I launched a Web Design Service for therapists by combining my tech and marketing skills with my clinical skills as a practicing mental health clinician—a web design service FOR therapists BY a therapist. After having completed the website for my own private practice, I wondered if there were other therapists out there struggling to create a great online presence. It turns out, the answer is a big “YES”. Upon launching into the ether a question of whether or not there were other practioners interested in having a beautiful, professional looking website, the response was immediate and volumous. Within 10 minutes of posting my services, I acquired 5 new build projects—all of which expressed a sense of relief in knowing that their website would be created by a professional who understood their work and specific needs. I reiterated to them what they already knew: “First impressions are everything—that’s why your practice needs a great website. A website is often the first experience a potential client has with your services. A professional look and feel is the first step toward building trust.” And so, I’m open for business. Do you know how to grow a private practice? Here's a proven road map for you! I've seen dozens of such posts: 🤔 I'm on Psychology Today, Instagram, TikTok, you name it 🤔 I distribute flyers/business cards in nearby clinics (and other places) 🤔 I tried networking with colleagues 🤔 I posted on Facebook groups And then one clanging question: What else can I do to get clients? Is this where you are right now? Well then, let me help 🚀 Many therapists make this mistake: They are in many (typically free) different places with their offer, but there are little to no clients coming through their door. Free places such as Facebook groups can be good, but they take time to actually work. Sometimes A LOT of time and equal amount of effort. If you want to grow your business faster, you need to focus on just 2 things: ➡ First off, get a website But not just any website. Your website has to be nicely designed with your ideal client in mind. Your website should say: ✅ What you can help with ✅ What therapy modalities you use in your work ✅ What makes you a good choice (USP) Think about who is your ideal client and then create a website that resonates with such clients. Use photos and texts to appeal to your ideal audience. For instance, a family therapist should have photos of happy families on their website. The same with texts - talk DIRECTLY to your ideal client. You-focused communication is a must-have. ➡ Find one or two proven sources of bookings To be more specific and for a start, ONE source of bookings is enough. Two are good too, especially if they are interconnected somehow. But you don't need to be in 10 different places; find one or two places and double down on them. Be where your clients are. In many cases, although not always, this place is Google. You can use SEO and/or Google Ads to grow your visibility on Google. And then turn it into the client-attracting machine, with potential clients entering through your door almost on auto-pilot. Hint: If you're just starting out, Google Ads is a better (and faster) choice. That's how I grew my PP from 0 to 6 figures in sales in less than 2 years. Here's a concept therapists need to unlearn: just having a website means more inquiries Pretty privilege doesn't just apply to people so your website's design needs to catch the eye. Or else you're sacrificing precious client inquiries. When working with past clients these are some common mistakes I notice: 👉 Copy that goes on and on and on Being detailed about how you help clients is key. But imagine you're a troubled young adult struggling with toxic family relationships. Your eyes would glaze over reading copy that isn't spaced out. Why? Because you just want to SKIM so you can decide you're the therapist for them. 👉 Visuals taking up TOO much of the screen Visitors like the young adult can appreciate your visuals. But they're here for the juicy details on how you will solve this problem for them. What are your methods? Who have you helped before? Did your services change their life? Use images sparingly throughout your website. Photos of you to build trust. Stock images portraying the emotions clients will feel after working with you. 👉 Visuals that don't add anything to the page Your ideal client has a nose that can sniff out fluff. And images having nothing to do with your website content are FLUFF at its finest. Photos of office spaces. Of nature (unless it aligns with your brand). Photos of people doing random things. So when designing your website be intentional with visuals. Show what their life will look like before working with you = images of unhappy families. Show what their life will look like after working with you = images of happy families. TLDR; be intentional with your website visuals and don't bombard your website visitors with long copy or you’ll lose clients. Your website is a few tweaks away from being a client-inquiring machine. great chat with an aspiring and talented therapist today who reached out, they have been struggling to get sufficient interest from potential clients under their own private practice. From my experience, directories have a very low ROI, the simple reason is that you are directly competing against many other therapists. We faced this issue very early on, getting less than 1 enquiry on average per month over a period of 12 months. Having changed the approach and where to smartly invest time and costs have already given just shy of 300 enquiries over an 8-month period, that is 37.5 per month of which most of the clients wanted to work with us, and still on the rise. Your personality and your core values and beliefs do not get to shine brightly on a non-branded profile, I know this because many clients have provided this feedback that one profile blurs into the next. Side point, working for yourself is far more satisfying and rewarding, as opposed to under a large enterprise who have turned therapy into a corporate business model where therapists work a lot of hours to get an average income, and they are left feeling empty and dissatisfied in the long term, it was not meant to be this way. The second problem, not knowing how to generate traffic effectively that will lead potential clients to you! Solutions in my 121 today: 1. Invest in proper branding to materialise a meaningful end product that feeds into all elements such as a website. (fixes issue 1) 2. Learning the difference between which socials are appropriate for you and how to optimise to get on the map for search engines. (fixes issue 2) 3. Don't underestimate yourself and be your worst enemy! (bonus) Have a great evening!
