It’s crazy how postdoc’s are literally the perveyors of culture and society - the heralds of a golden future of science, healthcare, and the technological future of America and yet they’re paid poverty wages. That is CRAZY to me. Like “oh yes please create our cures and amazing medicines and machines but please live in squalor and eat pag pag for breakfast lunch and dinner all day because you aren’t human” is what these conversations at the NIH sound like right now. Then folks wonder why academia is full of fake papers, research that is not reproducible, publish or perish mindsets, and overall rot - it’s because living wages are competitive. By virtue of having a living wage, you weed out corrupt actors. By paying your researchers a living wage, you attract the best and the brightest. Right now? We aren’t doing that. We are doing nothing of the sort. My proof and evidence? Look at the recent Stanford scandal, the recent Harvard scandals, the list goes ON AND ON!
The NIH will give postdoctoral researchers an 8% pay bump next year, far short of recommendations. https://trib.al/va5QKBA

"Oh my god, it's going viral!" The world is faced with many diseases and viruses; the job of an epidemiologist is to study 🔬 them and figure out how to stop or control them for the sake of public health ⚕️. What does it take to be successful in this demanding role? On the education front, you'll need to have a masters of public health. A good understanding of mathematical concepts and their applications such as algebra, odds, relative risk, biostatistics and probability is also wise. At the human level, epidemiologists work closely with a team of field workers, scientists and researchers, so having interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills to lead these people effectively goes a long way. Spirit of Math students that choose this career path are armed with both, helping them stand out from the competition. #SpiritOfMath #MathCareers #EpidemiologistLife #PublicHealthMatters #MathInScience #HealthcareCareer #MathSkills #EpidemiologistInTraining

I have successfully completed an online course titled as Biostatistics in Public Health by Johns Hopkins University via Coursera. I have learned key lessons including calculating summary statistics from public health and biomedical data; interpreting written and visual presentations of statistical data; evaluating and interpreting results of various regression methods; and choosing the most appropriate statistical method to answer any research question.

Postdoc appointments last too long and are often painful, so a 5-year cap is totally reasonable. However, the entire postdoc system needs structural changes, given that there are too many postdocs for the limited number of faculty positions available. We need to create alternative pathways for postdocs to remain in academia, such as offering more teaching and mentoring opportunities to help them transition into positions at PUIs (primarily undergraduate institutions), which would benefit greatly from such highly skilled mentors. Alternatively, we should establish more stable, tenured roles as scientific support in research-intensive universities. It's time to break the equation that postdoc = tenure-track; it's simply unsustainable. Salary is a secondary issue, especially since the NIH budget isn't increasing enough to support a $70k salary (excluding fringe benefits).
US postdoc support from NIH could be capped at five years — sparking criticism
