ED&I | How can we curtail the gender wars and move towards a more inclusive and just society where everyone has equal opportunity to thrive? Two incredible speakers discussed this important topic at the recent inspiring and thought-provoking Consult Australia Champions of Change 7th Annual Industry Lunch. Elisa Weeden, Liz Kane and Lara Vegas from HKA were in attendance and gained valuable insights on gender equality. Susanne Legena, CEO of Plan International Australia, highlighted both the highs and lows for gender equality in 2023. She stressed the importance of shifting social norms and understanding underlying attitudes to build a more gender-equal society. Plan International's Gender Compass research project is a great tool for designing targeted communications to drive change. David Leser, journalist and author, spoke about men's crucial role in driving gender equality. His stories about patriarchy, misogyny, and toxic masculinity aimed to open conversation and inspire change. These discussions made us reflect on how our workplaces respond to these issues and the role of business leaders in driving change. We need to continue these important conversations to work towards a more gender-equal future. #GenderEquality #ChampionsOfChange #InclusionMatters

This morning we hosted our panel discussion to celebrate International Women’s Day. The theme #inspireinclusion underscored the crucial role inclusion plays in achieving greater gender equality. Our panel debated this and a range of topics including: - Do we feel we'll ever get to a place of gender equality for women? - How can men actively support and advocate for gender equality in the workplace? - What advice would you give to female leaders who often experience being the ‘only woman’ in the room? - What does allyship mean to you? There were some inspiring comments from the panel: "I don't believe it's the responsibility of just one person, one leader, one group of people, or one department in an organisation to lead this - but it's about every individual person taking accountability to play their part in creating a more inclusive environment for the people." "It's critical that organisations keep this high and their list of strategic priorities - they can do this through support such as mentorship programs, education workshops and coaching support. There's an opportunity to make it less risky to engage and have these conversations - and be clear about why we do it." "It's about truly valuing the difference that others as individuals can make and actually recognising that we're all better off for having a bigger diversity mix." "We know that companies that are more gender diverse perform 25% better than companies that are less gender diverse." "You have to make leadership aspirational and accessible." "Your views and your voice are equally as important and as valid as everyone else's in the room." Great advise and thank you to our speakers for sharing your personal stories Helen Gallagher O'Beirne Claire McLoughney Ed Ryan Rebecca Driscoll Victoria Walmsley #inspireinclusion #womeninleadership #iwd2024

"If women lean in more, they will lean over". Quote by Dr Melissa Carr CPsychol AFBPsS at our DEI Club Panel Discussion yesterday on 'Women in Leadership'. The context of the quote is a reference to the "Lean In" book by Sheryl Sandberg from 2013 which encourages women to pursue their ambitions and take on leadership roles. The book and its messages serve as a clear illustration that we have indeed made progress with the agenda over the last decade. Exemplified by: 🔸 A shift from focusing on "fixing women" to making structural changes understanding that gender inequalities are deeply entrenched in the workplace itself. 🔸A shift from only looking at diversity numbers in senior leadership to a broader focus on the lived experience of ALL women and inclusion of all. 🔸A shift from workplace taboos to more open conversations - an enhanced focus on the impact of menopause is a great example. Previously considered "a weakness to be hidden", now considered a significant life event. 🔸A shift towards engaging men more as active allies who doesn't just say the right things but also acts. From the conversation and engagement with the participants it was also clear that "gender fatigue" is a common phenomenon. Some organizations believe that "they've done gender" which reflects the dangers of treating DEI as a project, rather that a continuous evolution of workplace culture. Thank you for a great experience Arvind Kaushal InstLM, Christine Evans-Cecil and Dr Melissa Carr CPsychol AFBPsS 🙏 ✨ #growingtogether #womeninleadership #DEIClub #dei #inclusiveworkplace

Helping organizations get everyone engaged in DEI - especially those who don't think DEI is for them. Senior Strategist, Speaker, Writer, Coach, Facilitator, and Advocate. No one is irredeemable.
If you haven't heard or watched this Ted Talk from Michael K. on gender equality, I highly recommend it. I promise you that you will get some laughs, and being that it's Women's History Month, now is a great time for it. He tells stories about how some people confront your unique identity spheres like race and gender constantly, while others of us can go our entire lives without considering how gender influences our experience. "That's the way privilege works. It's invisible to those who have it." Most importantly, he ends with why gender equality is good for EVERYONE. Specifically he shares that: 🔹 Countries with greater gender equality have happier people 🔹 Companies with greater gender equality have happier employees, higher retention rates, and higher rates of productivity 🔹 Gender equality results in better relationships 🔹 Gender equality is better for families What stands out to you about this TED talk? Are there some benefits (at the end) that appeal to you more than others? He has a ton of works on the topic of gender equality, have you read any of them? Curious to hear your recommendations. #Men #WomensHistory #GenderEquality #Identity

Women Empowerment Let's kick off our dialogue with a question: What does women empowerment mean to you? Many often link it to equal opportunities like men, but do you think there's more to it? I've had conversations where people emphasize gender equality as a key aspect of empowerment. But what does gender equality mean for you personally? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Here's something to ponder: If you could have a superpower to advance gender equality, what would it be? And how would you use it? For me, it's all about reshaping societal perceptions of gender, creating a culture where all genders collaborate, uplift, and support each other. Because in the end, gender equality is a shared goal that benefits everyone, don't you agree? Let's keep this dialogue going. Share your insights and perspectives in the comments below! Sharing some snapshots from the empowering training session I conducted at BJS ASC College, Wagholi, as part of their 'Nirbhay Kanya Abhiyaan' for Women Empowerment. #WomenEmpowerment #GenderEquality #NirbhayKanyaAbhiyaan
