Missed this one last week as well as, it seems, the entire audience it was intended for! Thirsty to stay relevant with younger demographics, Toyota (yes Toyota) has financed a short Cowboy Anime* series called GRIP inspired by Initial D (which ran from 1995-2013). Unfortunately, as of this moment, the YouTube Clip on Toyota’s official USA YouTube Channel (which only has 745K subs) has recorded an abysmal 7045 views. I personally think it actually looks very good. So, I’ll definitely check it out when the five episodes start to drop on Feb. 26th (with a weekly cadeance). But my fear is that it’s heavy-handed moral stance, simplistic good-vs-bad story, and (likely) corporate oversight, will prevent the series from having the kind of true emotional authenticity that anime audiences demand in their stories. Here’s the story synopsis: “The series follows protagonist Jae Kang and his companions as they navigate a futuristic metropolis controlled by the tech conglomerate SynthCorp. The series unfolds in a time where the joy of driving has been suppressed by SynthCorp’s dominance. Led by the enigmatic Dr. Synth, the corporation has convinced the public of the superiority of its cookie-cutter vehicles, which he has successfully persuaded the public to perceive as safer, more efficient and will lead to a more controlled society. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that things are not as they seem. Kang, accompanied by his specially modified GR Corolla, finds himself thrust into a race against time to liberate the city from imminent peril.” Note - I couldn’t find the actual production company responsible for the animation.
