That's why we've cultivated an approach that fosters collaboration and connection, even when we are miles apart. Here are some of our remote work best practices that keep our team engaged and productive: 1️⃣ Weekly Virtual Office: Every Friday, we dedicate a full day to our virtual office. This is a designated space for everyone to log in, work on projects together, and brainstorm in real-time. It's like having a co-working space, but without the commute!  2️⃣ Coffee Corner Chats: We all miss those casual chats by the coffee machine, right? That's why we have a dedicated "Coffee Corner" meeting plus a channel on our communication platform. It's a free space for anyone to jump in, grab a virtual cup, and chat about anything under the sun.  3️⃣ Weekly catchups by Communities: besides the daily tactical sync sessions, each Community joins weekly gatherings where they discuss work progress in more general terms and goals for upcoming weeks.  4️⃣ Beyond Work Connections: We believe strong relationships are key to a happy and productive team. We encourage virtual team-building activities, online social events, and even celebrate personal milestones together. These are just a few ways we make remote work a working feature for us! Totally agree and it also helps increase the overall economic growth and the serotonin for the employees, longevity in the company. To quote Rory Sutherland people want to retire to avoid the daily commute not that they don't like the job. Adding to this there might be other factors like age , younger folks might want to mingle. So there should be clear options given as well.

Is this the trend in ZA or are employers slowly regressing to office-based work? I'm curious to understand the relationship between remote work and productivity. Many colleagues indicate that they are happier and more productive when working from home, however, are employers seeing the same? Should we be trying to find a balance or should employers not care where one works from (as Tim states below)? Do we have sufficient employment opportunities in ZA to bargain on this issue? I know that during Covid I personally found the level of client care services (e.g call centres and banks) to be poorer due to several issues such as call signals, slow internet, calls dropped, background noise etc. However, I attributed this to the fact that this was new to most companies and they needed to adapt to the new normal and invest in the right infrastructure. I recently heard, though, that many of these companies are slowly bringing employees back to the office. Moreover, my teen son (who is online schooling) recently commented that he thinks its crazy that anyone must physically leave their house and go to an office everyday. This made me wonder if the Gen Zs and beyond will actually be willing to do office based work. Interesting times ahead though!

It’s all about trusting your employees.

Although I prefer working remotely I also think that people are complex and diverse. One size doesn't fit all. The best way is to be flexible and open to possibilities. Personally I prefer to use the right tool for the right job at the right time and price. For some people physical proximity matters to function properly. For others it doesn't. I opt for diversity and fluidity. Do whatever works. This way won't matter anymore where you are working from and you can focus on the goal of communication: human connection and getting results instead of focusing on policies and carrots&sticks polite fiction interactions.

Office vs. Remote: Which Work Environment is Best? As we navigate the changing landscape of work, the debate over office vs. remote work continues to grow. Each setup has its unique benefits. Working from the office offers the structure, routine, and face-to-face collaboration that many find beneficial for creativity and connection. It fosters a sense of community and culture that can be difficult to replicate remotely. Plus, there’s something about those spontaneous coffee-break conversations that spark great ideas! On the other hand, remote work offers flexibility and work-life balance that’s hard to beat. No commute, fewer distractions, and the ability to tailor your work environment to your preferences can lead to increased productivity. For many, it also means the freedom to work from anywhere in the world, which opens up new opportunities for personal and professional growth. Ultimately, the ideal working environment depends on the individual and the company’s goals. As hybrid models gain traction, combining the best of both worlds seems to be the way forward.
