I am looking forward to presenting to the The Royal Architectural Institute Of Canada | L'Institut royal d'architecture du Canada on the topics of Sustainable Urban Models and Humanizing Density I will be sharing insights from Farrells global experience of diverse urban contexts, looking at the crucial role of urban organization in shaping factors such as carbon footprint, user experience and social cohesion. Our discussion will cover the drivers and influencing factors of emerging urbanism, examining transit-oriented design and its application in the North American context. Additionally, we will also explore the significance and challenges of humanizing density and the potential for urbanism to embrace context and enhance inclusivity. It is a great pleasure to be able to collaborate with Bahar Namaki Araghi, PhD, P.Eng. of Arup who will be co-presenting and sharing insights into future mobility trends, facilitating meaningful discussion on how emerging technologies may shape city making, evolving patterns of occupation and the future urban experience. #Urbanism #Sustainability #TransitOrientedDevelopment #RAIC #Mobility

Last week marked a significant milestone for us at Gritnova Global Campus as we concluded two transformative courses: #MacroSustainableArchitecture and #Neuroarchitecture. We had the incredible opportunity to learn from industry leaders like Mr. Will Campion from BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group and Mrs. Arianna Bavuso from AB+AC Architects, diving deep into #urbandesign through the lenses of #sustainability, #humanexperience, and #mentalwellbeing. Key Takeaway: Whether designing intimate spaces or entire cities, thoughtful design must prioritize human connection and sensation. Concepts such as 15-minute cities, urban density, and sustainable infrastructure remind us that truly resilient spaces go beyond functionality—they evoke feelings of comfort, safety, and belonging. Looking forward, the #future of urban living lies in #smartcities and #circulareconomies. These innovative frameworks will reshape our urban landscapes—not by neglecting the human element, but by enhancing it—ultimately creating spaces that are better for people and the planet.

🏗️ Building a Resilient Future Starts Here 🌿 Earlier this week, we joined U.S. Green Building Council - #Minnesota at the #LEED Gold Schoenecker Center at University of St. Thomas—a space that embodies #innovation and #resilience. We explored how #university #campuses are paving the way for #adaptable, high-performing environments that #endure and #evolve. 💡 The Schoenecker Center stands as a true example of visionary #design, where #sustainability and #human-centered spaces converge to create #environments that enhance both #well-being and #performance. It’s a space that reflects the #future of how we build: intentional, forward-thinking, and #built to last. 🧠 💻 🏫 These conversations fuel a shared #mission to accelerate the #transformation of our built environments—creating places that empower #communities and inspire long-term #impact. 🌎 A big thank you to Brent Suski and the #USGBC for leading the way and #empowering us all to shape a more #resilient and sustainable #future, together. 💚 Project partners making this vision a reality: 🏗️ BWBR | RAMSA | Robert A.M. Recently, I attended the "How are cities accelerating progress towards a sustainable future?" talk by RICS World Built Environment Forum in partnership with Arcadis. The talk explored how to achieve successful sustainability in cities and utilise Arcadis' four pillars of sustainability: Planet, People, Profit and Progress. This was an incredibly useful talk in understanding the industry perspectives on ensuring sustainability in the built environment and how we can plan in the most effective way. This was particularly relevant to me as I am undertaking my undergraduate dissertation on the role of built heritage in sustainable cities. Here are my key takeaways from the talk: 🤝Collaboration is a gamechanger Sustainability should be defined as social, economic and environmental, so we must use a multidisciplinary approach. A connected vision between public and private stakeholders about place and the ability to encourage stakeholders can create a successful sustainable city 📈Long term vision is essential Cities trying to achieve the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals should do so by being consistent across social, environmental and economic sustainability - this is how the best performing cities become the best. Keeping cities affordable is key so adapting to a combination of areas/pillars and new information, especially in the face of advancing technology like AI, can encourage a more effective strategy ♻️Recycling > replacing Embodied carbon in the built environment is an asset and approaches to historic buildings should be innovative around decarbonising. Changes don't need to be monumental, as proved by the remodelling of Trafalgar Square in London, a now vibrant, active and economically successful area after creating a thoughtful agenda for change Thanks to Anil Sawhney, Céline Crestin, Peter Hogg, Carolien Gehrels and Stuart Rogers for providing your valuable insights! #arcadis #sustainability #builtenvironment #heritage #builtheritage #sustainabledevelopment #AI #strategy #planetpeopleprofitprogress #rics #worldbuiltenvironmentforum #circulareconomy #adaptivereuse #retrofit #architecture #construction #urbandesign #urban #transport #london #amsterdam #paris #manchester

Urban design plays a crucial role in creating integrated approaches for sustainable urban transformation. We congratulate our Master’s students in the Transforming City Regions programme, who won two 🏆🏆ISOCARP - International Society of City and Regional Planners student awards in 2024 for their urban design projects envisioning a sustainable transformation of RWTH Aachen University’s campus. The first prize went to Lyuzhi Ruan, Linbing Lyu, and Yining Sun, who designed strategies to improve campus soundscape in public open spaces, with a focus on supporting well-being and enhancing liveability. Ezgi I., Liyuan Ma, zhiran li, and Jinyu Zhu received a special mention for their project proposing strategies to reclaim water as a cultural asset and incorporate it into a climate adaptation and mitigation approach, enhancing the spatial integration of the campus with the city." The Living Building Challenge is a committment- to: - Regenerative buildings that connect occupants to light, air, food, nature, and community; - Self-sufficient and remain within the resource limits of their site. - Create a positive impact on the human and natural systems that interact with them. We are excited to be pursuing Core Certification for our affordable housing project, the only Canadian project to be approved by ILFI for the 2023-2026 cohort. Key design strategies include trauma informed design, biophillia and a strong connection to nature and ecology of place. #livingbuildingchallenge #sustainibility#regenerativedesign #biophilia#trauma informed design
