Another great event in the books! Last November Elevate acquired CIX • Canadian Innovation Exchange, a 2-day startup award program and investment conference. Over the past 6 months we’ve re-envisioned, rebranded, and re-launched this notable event. Over 500 people attended CIX 2024 including 140 prominent investors across North America to hear 60 of Canada’s most sought after, award-winning startups pitch on stage, with 300 one-on-one meetings to power investment deals. To say it was eye-opening is an understatement! There is so much innovation happening in Canada, we should be shouting it from the rooftops! Economies are fuelled by founders and entrepreneurs, and Canada is full of them. Brilliant ones. Just waiting for someone to bet on them. Want proof - AI was born in Canada. Over this weekend at #SEF2024, I attended a unique panel session which was led by Abdullah Mutawi, Walid Mansour & Yamen S. Al-Hajjar يامن بن سامي الحجار. They collectively answered my forever question, "What are investors looking for (when investing in a startup)?" And no, it's NOT always about the technology or the problem one is solving. Earlier in 2010s, I would say startups had it fairly easy, but with the investment markets getting tougher this year and a rise in first-time founders like myself, it's more about sustenance and resilience. The fundamentals that a company should be built on, is being critically examined & observed. Basically, its not just how fast you go, but also how far you go, with who you go and how you pivot. Some key points from the panel that I would like to share with my audience (aspiring founders as well): 🔶 Surround yourself with people who will ask difficult questions 🔶 Take care of your health and spend time with your loved ones 🔶 Work super hard! Be confident, fearless and unstoppable 🔶 Incorporate a proper legal structure & a healthy work environment 🔶 Stop over-inflating your product, mission or startup, be realistically ideal! 🔶 Build relationships! Network, navigate and analyze your investor ecosystem before the "ask" Speaking from experience, you can move slow sometimes but just make sure to grow in all directions.
