I’m part of a campaign to save our local pub. The tenant landlords left at the beginning of this year and the owner wants to sell up - the land is highly desirable as a development opportunity. We want a local pub in our village. It’s fun and scary at the same time. It’s notoriously hard to run a viable pub (or any kind of hospitality business) but we are getting such great local support and lots of financial pledges. It’s a voyage of discovery on many levels. I’ve already learnt about one pub where, if you ask for a generic glass of wine (eg a sauvignon blanc) without specifying which one you want, they sell you the most expensive on the list without even asking. One way to make a profit, I suppose, but blimey, eye-opening. Watch this space for more hot tips on how to run a pub and/or not to be fleeced as a customer. (These two things may not be compatible and at some point I may have to choose which side I’m on!)
