A Project Lifecycle typically consists of five main stages: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, and closure. These phases make up the path that takes your project from start to finish. And any one of these can ruin the projects overall outcome. An extensive $300 mn project is taking shape in reality, impacting 100 municipalities and several First Nations communities in eastern Ontario. If I were the project manager, I would have chosen a hybrid approach because some parts of it could be planned well in advance. Still, considering the technological advancement, one cannot avoid the dynamic requirements. What would you have done differently?

This week’s #wisdomwednesday statement continues the theme of understanding project flow by managing the amount of work in process. Examine the mindset myth that the sooner a project starts the sooner it will finish. In reality, too much work in process slows flow and delays completion; in other words stop starting and start finishing. Projects deliver value and benefits to our organizations which prompts us to start them as soon as possible. Our instincts tell us that to get a project completed as soon as possible, we must start it immediately. However, when our project environments are running low on capacity, these decisions can have the opposite effect; projects can take significantly longer to complete which delays the benefits. Like a highway ramp-meter that limits the entry of cars onto overloaded highways to optimize the flow, strategically holding projects before activating them allows for optimized project flow. Project benefits can be significantly accelerated when we stop starting and start finishing.
