Welcome back to our 'Microbiology 101' series! Today, we're diving into the fascinating world of Sporulation. Did you know that metabolically active bacteria are in what's called the vegetative phase? Metabolically active bacteria are referred to as being in the vegetative phase of their life cycle. Some bacteria, like Bacillus have a sporulation phase that protects the bacterial colony from unfavorable environmental conditions. This is a survival strategy for the bacteria and once formed, the spore can survive in a dormant state for long periods of time. Generally speaking, this spore is viable in hostile environments and resistant to harsh chemicals and temperatures.
