Today is International Day of Friendship, and while that may not seem like a LinkedIn-appropriate holiday, friendships in the workplace are so very important. Strong professional relationships often lead to a more productive, collaborative, and enjoyable work environment, and I’ve been so fortunate to make many great work friends over the years (including one of my very closest, Carson Brown!).
Why do work friendships matter?
1. Enhanced Collaboration: Trust and open communication among work friends can foster greater collaboration, leading to innovative ideas and successful projects.
2. Improved Job Satisfaction: Having friends at work can significantly boost job satisfaction, making each day more enjoyable and less stressful.
3. Support System: Friendships provide a support system, helping navigate challenges and celebrate successes together.
4. Increased Retention: Employees with strong workplace friendships are more likely to stay with their organizations, reducing turnover and maintaining team stability.
Not sure how to create a culture that encourages friendship? You can try…
✅ Providing team-building activities (at Pierce Public Relations, I started a mini-committee called “Culture Club” for people to create their own opportunities to get together!)
✅ Encourage open and honest communication between team members
✅ Celebrate successes together, both big and small (call out wins at company meetings or in team chats)
✅ Create an inclusive and supportive workplace culture by encouraging your team to be and bring their best, most authentic selves to work
So, whether it's a quick coffee break/happy hour with a colleague or a team-building event, today we’re celebrating and encouraging the great friendships we make at work!
