It's the last working day before Christmas for many in Communications, but if you're working or on call, especially in public sector Comms, then thank you! We really appreciate your service during what is such a busy and challenging time for the NHS and our public services. I also wanted to share a little bit of inspiration if you're feeling a wee bit burnt out towards the end of this year. Bruce Daisley shared his brilliant newsletter yesterday, sharing workplace trends and ideas for next year, amid often depressing stats around employee (dis)engagement, burn out and stress. It made me think of this TED talk below. It's just over a minute long and well worth your time. In it, famous orchestra conductor Benjamin Zander shares his "shining eyes" theory about employee engagement and how to foster it as a leader. I first saw this whilst in an incredibly challenging role as a new Director of Communications in an under-performing NHS Trust. I've never forgotten how it made me (and the exec team) feel. And more importantly, how it gave us motivation to continue the important work of creating a culture where our people could thrive. Caring for them, so that they could care for others. That's what it's all about as leaders! It's been a long journey in HR, Operations and Leadership. What we continue to learn, over and over, is that company cultures are 100% what make or break a business! It’s not a DEI committee or program that create business success or happy, engaged employees. #DEI: The reality is that great HR practitioners that are focused on people, evolving best practices and processes in HR, and fostering killer cultures DO the work and impact of DEI daily. It's time to kill the buzzword and empower individuals to do their best work as the professionals they are. DEI is done consistently by hiring leaders in our industry that are focused on people as much as they are focused on business. That's the win-win and sweet spot every entrepreneur should hire for and build so they can create an environment their teams thrive in! #Whatnext? Hire great HR and People Operations practitioners that don't need a buzzword or justification to implement equitable and fair pay practices, create compensation/total reward strategies, promote talent acquisition practices, evolve unbiased hiring processes, and continuously foster killer cultures that transcend into psychological safety and continuous feedback environments. DEI = Divides Encouraged by Influencers! Don't let a buzzword override hard earned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). #Reminder: Businesses don't fail because they don't have a DEI team or plan, or because they don't pay their people enough. Leaders and HR practitioners fail in this scenario. Businesses and Leaders fail because they don’t listen to their teams or because they are not focused on purpose, people, or process. Alternatively, I believe the only reason our businesses succeed is due to our teams, the people.
