The Bay Area is at the forefront of tackling a national crisis: a severe shortage of teachers. As stated by The Mercury News, "nearly 40% of schools in California had teaching vacancies they found either very difficult or impossible to fill, according to the Learning Policy Institute, a research organization that focuses on K-12 education. That, of course, trickled down to the need for — and the lack of — substitute teachers, which classrooms are still feeling today." 📉 Alameda County's Pipeline to Increase Community Teachers (PICT) program is designed to provide school districts with qualified substitutes who are familiar with the community in which they work. One of the goals of this program is to draw more people into the world of teaching. 📚 That's why I'm proud to announce that I've applied to the program in hopes to spend more time in the classroom while supporting my community. 🙌 If you're in the Bay Area and interested in teaching, consider applying here: https://lnkd.in/gNuH5Eu2 Let's make a difference, one classroom at a time 🍎. #TeacherShortage #EducationReform #ActNow

Under-designed. A collective blindspot. I can tell you all about why substitute teaching isn't working well in America. And Substantial Classrooms we are working hard to get it working better for kids and adults. But it's a bit perplexing -- and disheartening -- to see that the dynamics around substitute teaching are similar across many countries. The only positive outlier is Australia, where subs are more like visiting nurses, highly skilled and paid well. Trying to make sense of what creates the circumstances for the same systemic weakness to show up in so many different places. And if it's possible to change it.
“We always need substitute teachers,” Reupert said. “It’s in our best interest that the substitute teaching workforce is professional, that they’re treated with respect—and that flows into pay and conditions and professional development opportunities—because ultimately, that’s better for our kids. The amount of times they get substitute teachers, we can’t afford to give them babysitters.” Wonder how sub experiences in the US compare to other countries? Fascinating new research highlighted in this article from Madeline Will in Education Week.

California is making it easier to become a preschool teacher, aiming to address the statewide teacher shortage and expand its public preschool program. The state introduced a new PK-3 Early Childhood Education Specialist Instruction Credential to fast-track teachers into the classroom. Sacramento State will start offering this credential in fall 2025, and it's part of California's Master Plan for Early Learning and Care. This initiative seeks to ensure educators are well-trained in equitable, inclusive, and diverse teaching practices for early education. “This is having a huge impact on our ability to rebound” from the pandemic, argues Amanda von Moos (she/her), executive director of Substantial Classrooms, an organization dedicated to better preparing and supporting substitute teachers in schools across the nation. To illustrate her point, she describes how “when no substitute is available, remaining teachers often have to do double duty — taking extra students in their classroom, or covering another class on their break — which can lead them to request days off in the future. Sometimes reading tutors or other specialists fill in, which means that extra support sessions — a priority to make up for pandemic learning losses — are canceled that day.” #Strategicstaffing approaches leverage teacher residents as site-based substitute teachers, maximizing the dollars already dedicated to covering teacher absences in district budgets. Unlike public schools, formal homeschooling programs or traditional private schools, nearly 9,000 private schools in Louisiana don’t need state approval to grant degrees. Nearly every one of those unapproved schools was created to serve a single homeschooling family, but now some have buildings, classrooms, teachers and dozens of students. They may represent a small percentage of the state’s students, but those in Louisiana’s off-the-grid school system are a rapidly growing example of the nation's continuing fallout from COVID-19 — families disengaging from traditional education. https://lnkd.in/gBsKPrEn
