As I pack my bags for #Greenbuild in Philadelphia next week I can’t help but think about the last time we all gathered in Philly in 2013. #LEEDv4 was released, Hillary Clinton was the keynote speaker, and Bon Jovi was the musical guest (be still my teenage heart). It was an exciting time infused with passion, Greenbuild is always the shot of inspiration that I didn’t even realize I needed.
As I head to Philly this year, with the news that #LEEDv5 is coming in Q1 2025, the buzz of excitement with my sustainability peeps is palpable, though I do sense a touch of hesitation, maybe even fear with my broader industry peeps when it comes to LEEDv5. Not only has it been more than a decade since LEEDv4 was released, it’s been a quarter of a century since LEEDv1 first hit the scene in 1998. Each new version of LEED comes with a few growing pains and even more opportunity.
LEED and I hit the building industry at nearly the same time, we were both young and wanted to make a difference in the world. We’ve been friends and confidants since day one, we have leaned on each other in the hard times and celebrated the good times. 25 years later, we are both still evolving to push past our comfort zone for progress that has a positive impact. When I look back at how far we’ve come, I am extremely proud of the progress we’ve made. When I look to the future, I know this fight is nowhere near over, there is so much more work to be done.
Another thing I remember from Greenbuild 2013 was the CRAZY long check-in line, thankfully check in has been running smoothly the last few years and those lines seem to be a thing of the past. One thing is for sure, there is an extraordinary group of people gathering in Philly next week, this year maybe more so than any other, the timing could not be better. This is a group of people that have done and will continue to do great things, no matter the obstacles. Thanks to all of you that provide support and give me hope on a daily basis, I look forward to seeing you next week. Together, we will continue to do great things.
