Diversity & Inclusion – New ways of thinking require new ways of working. 🌍🌟 Outdated recruitment methods don’t cut it anymore. Do you agree? Traditional methods like contingency (transactional) recruitment, preferred supplier lists (PSLs), job adverts, employee referrals, and posts on social media are no longer sufficient. If we want a diverse and inclusive workplace, we need to expand and optimize our candidate search using a comprehensive consultative process that targets 100% of the talent pool—engaging both active and passive candidates with zero bias or discrimination. Did you know that 10 to 20% of the talent pool is active at any time? This leaves 80 to 90% untapped if we don’t change our approach. Yesterday at the IHR - In-house Recruitment event in Bristol, I was reminded why industry events are so valuable—not just for networking but for real, solution-oriented conversations. Here are some high-level themes and takeaways: 1. Community and Connection Matter Mark Lennox highlighted the importance of networking in the talent industry. The message was clear: collaboration unlocks collective problem-solving. Beyond processes and metrics, being less robotic and more personal drives true engagement and growth. 2. Upskilling and Empowerment Michael Garner shared how he was able to shift from heavy agency reliance in executive search by upskilling local TA teams and establishing a robust process which led to a remarkable 90% reduction on agency spend and higher effectiveness. However, he pointed out common gaps: lack of emphasis around onboarding, and many TA teams hesitation to challenge hiring managers on core role expectations. 3. Data-Driven Evolution Michelle D. underscored the necessity of data in guiding TA decisions and stakeholder education (which was only possible through ATS engagement). Keeping pipelines authentic and engaging with candidates within 24 hours post-application were just a few strategies that boosted their fulfilment stats and candidate experience. 4. Strategic Agency Reduction Ben Moriarty showcased how a proactive “internal-first” approach cut down agency dependency from 40 to 10 partners, emphasizing a data-centric approach to continuous cost-per-hire monitoring, understanding offer decline impacts and adopting a less "post and pray" approach to their job adverts. 5. Retention and Culture over Salary Charlotte Williams Assoc CIPD delivered compelling insights into the steps Good Energy took to establish what culture meant to their diverse team and how they used this to ensure their marketing and recruitment activities mirrored the important aspects for each department and candidate pool. Hearing about their findings of when culture becomes more important than salary was very insightful! 🌟 Reflections on Nearly Two Decades in Recruitment 🌟 Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working in the ever-evolving world of creative, digital, and tech recruitment. It’s a space full of energy, innovation, and, yes, its fair share of challenges. Of the many things I have learned, successful hiring is less about filling a role and more about shaping the future of a company. Implications for the Creative, Digital, and Tech Sectors: The creative, digital, and tech industries continue to be pivotal in driving innovation and growth. However, the current economic climate presents challenges in attracting and retaining top talent. Companies are advised to adopt strategic hiring practices, focusing on critical roles that drive growth and innovation and consider upskilling and reskilling existing employees to meet evolving demands. Why I Started CDR: I founded CDR - Creative Digital Recruitment to bring a more thoughtful, tailored approach to recruitment. I wanted to prioritise quality over quantity, value genuine connections, and understand the unique demands of the creative and digital sectors. Key lessons I’ve picked up along my 20-year journey: 🔍 Depth Over Volume: Recruitment isn’t a numbers game. I’ve seen time and again that thoughtful, well-researched approaches yield the best outcomes—whether it’s advising a start-up on structuring a new team or helping a brand refine their employer value proposition to attract top talent. 🤝 Building Real Connections: The best placements happen when we understand not only the skills needed but also the culture and vision of the company and then connect it with the right person. 🚀 Adapting with the Times: Staying agile is crucial as the digital and tech landscape shifts. This means keeping a pulse on trends and evolving skills to provide the most relevant recruitment advice. Looking Ahead: As we move into 2025, businesses should remain attentive to the evolving challenges. The anticipated economic stability and growth are promising, and the focus on acquiring and retaining skilled talent in technology and problem-solving suggests a proactive approach to future market demands.
