For Seicomart Co Ltd. our client for almost 30 years, the launch of Beaujolais Nouveau is a momentous occasion. It reflects Japan's status as the top export market for this renowned product. In 2019 alone, a remarkable five million bottles made their way to Japan. Several factors contribute to the immense popularity of Beaujolais Nouveau in Japan: 💸 Reason 1: The decision in 1985 to shift the release date to the third Thursday in November coincided with Japan's economic surge, known as the "bubble boom." This alignment of festivities with economic prosperity significantly boosted sales. 🍷 Reason 2: Japanese culture embraces "Hatsu Mono," or the first of the season, symbolising new beginnings and good fortune. Beaujolais Nouveau's status as the first wine of the harvest makes it particularly appealing to Japanese consumers. 🕰️ Reason 3: Japan's time difference allows consumers to enjoy Beaujolais Nouveau eight hours ahead of France, adding an extra layer of anticipation. This leads to enthusiastic queues outside stores, eager to be among the first to purchase. 🇯🇵 Reason 4: The light and fruity taste of Beaujolais Nouveau perfectly complements the Japanese palate, further enhancing its appeal and consumption. The launch of Beaujolais Nouveau in Japan is celebrated with fervor, including unique events like "wine bathing" at Yunessun, a renowned hot spring in Hakone. Each year, P&W receives a varied brief from Seicomart, but the core objective remains consistent: to create European-influenced, elegant wine labels that capture the fresh essence of the wine's bouquet.
