One of the biggest challenges for families and children in a disaster is displacement due to damage and destruction of housing. This disproportionally impacts families who live paycheck-to-paycheck, are on public assistance, or have nowhere to go. While emergency shelters provide "temporary" relief, these families and their children are known to become "more vulnerable" after these incidents. Our disaster teams are working quickly to mobilize, preparing dozens of shelters and moving truckloads of relief supplies in Florida and Georgia before Hurricane Helene makes landfall. Helene is expected to be one of the fastest intensifying hurricanes on record to impact the Florida Panhandle, bringing up to 120 mph winds, a 15-foot storm surge, and severe inlet flash flooding. How to Prepare: If you’re in the path of the storm, please heed evacuation orders and plan how you will stay safe. This should include gathering emergency supplies, staying informed with local alerts, and preparing for power outages. Watching the devastation in North Carolina, Tennessee, and other states, my heart goes out to families affected by Hurricane Helene. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones, who face logistical challenges, and lack a place to call home. In times like these, I am proud of #GDIT for our unwavering support to FEMA, aiding fellow Americans in their time of greatest need. Earlier this year, FEMA introduced crucial changes to its Individual Assistance program, revolutionizing disaster recovery support. These reforms include streamlining processes, introducing new benefits, and simplifying applications, all aimed at prioritizing survivors' needs. These reforms are monumental, reshaping how FEMA and the Federal government assist individuals in recovering from disasters. The emphasis remains on ensuring that the most vulnerable communities and small businesses, often the hardest hit by calamities, receive the necessary support to rebuild and thrive. #Companywithasoul

Housing Insecurity and Vulnerability Low-income communities are often characterized by housing insecurity, with many residents living in substandard or overcrowded conditions. These structures may be more susceptible to damage during hurricanes, leaving residents exposed to the elements and potentially dangerous debris. Additionally, the lack of affordable housing options can make it difficult for displaced residents to find safe and suitable temporary accommodations after the storm. Limited Access to Recovery Resources Following a hurricane, low-income communities may have limited access to recovery resources. This can include government assistance, disaster relief aid, and essential services such as food, water, and shelter. These disparities can exacerbate the hardships faced by residents, making it difficult for them to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the storm.

In the face of uncertainty and the storms affecting so many in the Southeast, we want you to know you’re not alone. It’s natural to feel anxious and overwhelmed, but together, we can recover—physically, emotionally, and mentally. 🌪️ Hurricane Helene Recovery Efforts and Funding Released 🌪️ The Biden-Harris Administration has released over $344 million in federal disaster assistance to help communities affected by Hurricane Helene rebuild and recover. This funding will provide critical support for housing repairs, temporary shelter, and basic needs such as food and water across impacted states like Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Additionally, $130 million in emergency relief has been allocated for repairing roads and bridges in these areas. GMHA is helping keep their members up-to-date on the latest resources following this devastating storm. See below for the latest update from GMHA: Governor Brian Kemp has announced residents in 41 Georgia counties affected by Hurricane Helene are now eligible to apply for disaster assistance. The Public Assistance programs in the Major Disaster Declaration are currently limited to assistance for emergency work and repairing or replacing disaster-damaged facilities. As additional assessments are completed, more counties may be added. Individuals in these designated counties can apply for assistance in any of the following ways: Online at DisasterAssistance.gov Calling 1-800-621-3362 People who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585.
