It's no trick! Experimental projects that blaze new territory are difficult to achieve. But the treat comes when teams are not afraid to learn by doing. Health systems like OSF HealthCare in Illinois are experimenting with two distinct VIRTUAL NURSING methods — one that applies installed technology on patient room TVs that can facilitate an audio-visual connection with the patient, and another which provides a tablet for patient use. The future of nursing is virtual, with bedside and remote nurses working together to triage patients, conduct rounds, determine interventions, verify medications, and coordinate and complete discharge processes. #virtualnursing #pandahealth 🐼

Improving but still one third of nurses planning to leave their current positions! This not only is a huge financial burden for hospitals, patient safety suffers when the nurse turnover is high. As this article states, staffing issues have been going on long before the pandemic. Thoughts on a national roundtable discussion to brainstorm innovative strategies? Do you count #newborns as part of your hospital census? Yes, this is a legitimate question. Hospitals across the nation do not count well newborns in their census. They count the mothers, but not the newborns. Or they count “bassinets,” as they are often referred to. Which means that in many cases, the productivity and acuity of newborn care is not calculated. Or addressed. Or staffed for. (But yes, the newborn care is captured on the charges, but may not be part of the staffing matrix 🤯). As we are discussing innovating inpatient nursing care models…if you don’t have a #perinatal nursing expert working with you or your team, you need to find one. Women and Infant service lines have been and continue to be marginalized within many hospital settings. Thanks Heidi E. Morin, MSN, MBA, RN, FABC for kicking off the conversation. Our company was founded on the idea that nurse labor efficiency should be based on patient centered metrics, capturing the actual workload. Today, most organizations are still using births, deliveries or midnight census to measure nursing productivity. These are outdated, too broad and not indicative of the actual nursing activity. Parity Healthcare Analytics is leading the change, offering patient centered, acuity based metrics to measure and optimize your nurse workforce! RN Project Manager working to improve maternal health outcomes. Perinatal mental health advocate, peer support group leader, childbirth educator, and former Labor and Delivery RN
Louder for the people in the back!! 🙌 Birth is FAR MORE than a nursing productivity measure. The amount of sweat, tears, and love a labor and delivery nurse pours into their patient is truly remarkable. When I worked on the floor as a labor and delivery nurse, I came home exhausted, sweaty, sore, and covered in bodily fluids that weren't mine more times than I can count. But I also came home happy knowing I gave the best patient-centered care that I could. Patient-centered nursing care can be the difference between someone having a vaginal delivery over a cesarean section. It can be the difference in an infant successfully breastfeeding vs. switching to formula. It can be the difference of life vs. death.
