This is huge for transparency in the industry and for academics. Netflix has kept quiet about its viewership data for years, leaving scholars and industry professionals to speculate about how the company chooses its programming. Now, we finally get to learn more. (And for someone, say, currently drafting a research paper about the future of Netflix Originals and their worth in the streaming market, invaluable data just became much more accessible.)
Love our Top 10 Lists but want to dig deeper? Starting today, Netflix will release a twice yearly engagement report showing hours viewed for our original and licensed titles in the previous six months. The first list is here and covers Jan to June ‘23: https://lnkd.in/gUV7xd-T

Really interesting to see this level of transparency in data sharing.

Netflix finally shares viewership stats on its shows and movies from their 250Million+ subscribers. Based on this data, I have watched all shows on T10 and all movies on T10! While on the surface it looks like transparency, no doubt, this is one step further into optimizing Ad spend $'s. #advertisingstrategy #hours #transparency https://lnkd.in/g5wiJWnz

Not all brands respond positively to diversification, and there's no guarantee that a highly talented team will deliver a high quality output. As an avid theatre-goer and fan of Netflix's 'Stranger Things', I had been very excited to see the new stage prequel in the West End. For Netflix, this was a significant diversification away from streaming TV. Season 4 of Stranger Things clocked up over 100 million viewers in its first 28 days, while theatre audiences are limited to just 32,000 over the same period. There is precedent for this: for example, Disney has trodden the path from film to theatre to great critical and commercial acclaim. J.K. Rowling oversaw the transition of Harry Potter from book to film to groundbreaking theatre production, with many of the 'Stranger Things' production team having previously worked on Harry Potter. However, in the case of 'Stranger Things', I was disappointed. Although the cast, director and production team were of the highest calibre, the play felt like an attempt to reproduce a TV episode on stage rather than create something original. With the exception of a barnstorming prologue and a powerful performance from Louis McCartney as Henry Creel, there was little that fans of the show won't have seen before (albeit on TV rather than on stage). At the same time, those new to Stranger Things will struggle to understand key parts of the plot. For me, this was a great example of top quality components being forced together to create something that was significantly less than the sum of its parts. I hope that Netflix takes a more careful approach to any future theatrical endeavours before we end up with Breaking Bad: The Musical. #netflix #strangerthings #theatre #westend

Netflix shared this week specific viewing numbers on its most popular shows from the first half of this year, something it has never done before. Netflix for the first time, has provided information about what people are watching more than any other streamer except YouTube. And seems they will go further by committing to publish from now on twice a year the “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report”, being a comprehensive report of what people watched on Netflix over a six month period, including: * Hours viewed for every title — original and licensed — watched for over 50,000 hours. * The premiere date for any Netflix TV series or film. * Whether a title was available globally. In total, this first report covered more than 18,000 titles — representing 99% of all viewing on Netflix from January to June 2023 — and nearly 100 billion hours viewed. Not only did Netflix share these detailed numbers report, but it even provided them in an Excel file, which is essentially inviting people to analyze the data for insights. This is a giant leap for Netflix and and for the VOD industry, and a way forward to share customer engagement data from now on transparently and publicly. #Netflix #VOD #Data #customer_engagement #Analytics
