The VFX scene is rapidly evolving with the recent acquisition of Tippet Studios by India's Fantom VFX. This is another sign of India's rising influence in the VFX world, joining established players like DNEG and the Reliance Entertainment portfolio. India's VFX offerings are highly competitive, even when compared to heavily subsidized countries like Canada and the UK. From my experience, India's VFX talent pool is both skilled and dedicated, whether working in-house or as outsourced vendors. Last year, I had the chance to work with Outpost India team, who did an exceptional job on "The Creator," handling most of our CG requirements with outstanding results. However, this “unfair” advantage might come at the cost of poor working conditions for many workers. Fair treatment should be a goal that all indian companys are striving for. I’ve heard so many horror stories about 18-hour shifts, dodgy contracts with heavy penalties, or inadequate compensation. The ongoing industry downtime, unfortunatly exacerbated by strikes, might set the stage for more consolidation as companies struggle to survive. In any case well played Phantom FX, I hope the Tippet brand will continue shinning in these swiftly changing times.

Its the right move for Universal to buy it. Gives them DC, Dune, Game of Thrones, LoTR, and Potter (already in the parks). The animation portfolio has a lot to work with – Looney Toons, Scooby Doo, Hanna Barbara, Cartoon Network. With Illumination and Dreamworks, WB-Universal would be an animation powerhouse that rivals Disney. Max + Peacock makes MaxCock (teehee) a must-have streaming service that probably gets Netflix / Disney+ levels of adoption. Between Blumhouse and Warners they would corner the market on horror adding Friday the 13th, Conjuring, It, Nightmare on Elm Street, and more to the portfolio. And it gives them a gaming division that they've always wanted along with one of the few multi-decade games franchises – Mortal Kombat – which could be much larger than a fighting game. Basically, its a win on streaming, gaming, IP, animation, horror, superheros, parks, merchanise, etc etc. Questions are – price, whether they have to buy Discovery to get it, and whether the FTC will allow the merger.

I loved Godzilla Minus One and it’s Oscar win should be a wake-up call for Hollywood. It’s time to rethink VFX. With a modest budget and a small team, this film outshone the blockbuster behemoths, proving that creativity and collaboration trump resources. If you need high-end VFX imagery for a film, TV show or video game, the VFX-as-a-creative-service industry is the only game in town. Despite this, it’s an industry in which the buyers have a lot of power, companies compete on price, and barriers for entry are low. #vfx #vfxindustry #strategy #competition

Game producers: Stop trying to make everything more efficient. There are so many ways to become more efficient. You can become efficient in time, efficient in quality, efficient in people, efficient in scope. And none of them may solve the underlying issues your team faces. I get that we're incentivized to say, "We got 20% more art assets completed this quarter than last quarter thanks to the new pipeline I developed!" and everyone claps and you look good and all that. Did you need 20% more art assets? Most places I've seen need about 60% LESS art assets. Or perhaps a better way to say it, most studios need to figure out what art assets actually matter and stop treating artists like machines on a factory floor. That's what you should be doing. Not just going more, faster, cheaper, but stepping back, seeing the whole, and figuring out how to improve the overall chances of success. It's almost certainly not by shaving 10% meeting load out of the week. Figure out what's going to stop your team and game from succeeding.
