Reality TV filming in Los Angeles has experienced a dramatic decline, with shoot days dropping nearly 57% from April to June 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Despite expectations for an increase in unscripted production post-strikes, the reality TV landscape remains bleak, driven by a lack of tax incentives and industry-wide cost-cutting. Shows like "Selling Sunset" and "American Idol" were among the few to continue filming. The downturn is part of a broader decline in LA's production sector, which saw a 28% decrease in total shoot days compared to last year.

The New Normal One year after the strikes that gripped Hollywood the “new normal” continues to evolve. Film and TV production in the US (in particular LA) is down almost 15% from 135 in March 2022 to 157 in March 2024. The need to make profit (not adding subs and figuring out how to make money later) is the main reason. Or cost, we can call it cost. At the same time globally 148 scripted TV show are in production vs 140 YAGO. The direction is clear and once again cost is one of the drivers, amongst other things. Recent survey from talker news stated the obvious, #genz is very open to subtitles growing up on YouTube. More and more audiences are watching stuff from outside the US, as investment follows (or leads) this will continue. Producing great reality television is an art that requires trust with the contestants. While the job comes with a paycheck, contestants will only perform to their fullest if they trust the production team. As someone who has witnessed athletes push their limits to the brink, I can attest to the power of trust in competition. Even in atrocious conditions, they will hold on if they believe the show is making them a better person. However, the moment that trust is lost, motivation dies, second thoughts become the norm, and paranoia sets in. Do you prefer reality TV or scripted theatrical entertainment? We're trying something new at K & C Media! As filmmakers in training, we lean more towards scripted content. With "Saving Skateland," we decided to take a swing at reality tv and document the process of keeping a Pine Bluff business open! Pine Bluff struggles to attract businesses and keep them open, things that ultimately contribute to the struggling economy of the city. So this will be a very challenging journey to try and change the trajectory of another business on the brink.
