On December 17th Poland took delivery of its 84th K2 MBT. The contract was signed in September of 2022. A further 96 K2s are to be delivered in 2025, completing the initial order. A K2 MBT takes the 3-man crew less than 3 months to master for single vehicle use. Full unit capability/certification is done hereafter. To compare, a friendly neighboring country decided to go with a market peer, confirming the order of 44 MBTs on this same day. Expected deliveries are between 2029 and 2034, with then full operational capability closer to 2040. The above mentioned Polish initial order will be followed by a quantity of 820 K2 MBTs, the majority of which are to be produced locally in Poland. The setting up of facilities and tuning-in of the industry takes a little time but is coming closer. Irregular Warfare in Europe - Q&A with Ben Hodges which is worthwhile listening to and reflecting in order to raise awareness on existential strategic matters. My personal take aways and considerations: Conclusions should be drawn on defining, adapting, adjusting the European pillar in NATO with geopolitical implications. SACEUR „family of plans“ as approved by the NAC at Vilnius Summit leads to requirements and capabilities. Would those suffice the need to robustly support Ukraine against Russia and make the bravehearts win this war? If that was the case some Allies would not step up and declare readiness for building a coalition of the willing dedicated to enhancing combat readiness (training) of Ukrainian forces on Ukrainian territory; without dragging NATO into war. Irregular warfare in many aspects even more would gain momentum below the level of kinetic battle but with highly detrimental effects on all those nations who are still bound to rules based order. They would be confronted with the choice between preferably living in a zoo or willingness to step out into the jungle ready to adapt fighting skills like terrorist state Russia has been practicing for long time. My follow-on deliberations include opening the box of revisiting the Baltic Sea after accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO with Russian nuclear footprint in Kaliningrad and extended direct border to Russia. Irregular warfare in response to the threat should be part of a robust containment strategy against Russia. Volatile grey zone of threats; but my assumption is that concepts become self explanatory, requirements clear and capabilities within nations (single set forces) available. EU should/could take a lead role without being blocked or getting stuck in endless theoretical beauty contest „pillar debate“ with NATO . Smart approach with coalitions in capabilities should be feasible. Critical aspect: a conceptual approach about irregular warfare must not ignore the vital role of UK (Grant Shapps) and Her critical role in support of Ukraine. My humble view tells me that UK as non EU player but key Ally to NATO must not be by passed or ignored. I would even define UK role as conditio sine qua non. Dr. Olga R. ✈️🤩 NATO has received its eighth A330 multi-role tanker transport aircraft, bolstering the alliance's air-to-air refueling capabilities. The plane is scheduled to be fitted with refueling pods as part of its hose and drogue system, allowing it to refuel other aircraft conducting extended-range flights in NATO missions.
