🌟 When it rains, it pours! 🌟 🎉 On the back of a previous publication just three days ago 😄, I'm excited to share another piece of PhD work that has just been published in Spatial and Spatio-temporal Epidemiology: "Improving the spatial and temporal resolution of burden of disease measures with Bayesian models." This paper highlights how Bayesian spatio-temporal models can enhance the resolution of health data, which in turn can provide more reliable estimates of burden of disease. 🙏 This work resulted from a wonderfully fruitful collaboration between QUT (Queensland University of Technology), Department of Health (WA Health) and Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). Huge thanks to my co-authors: Kerry Staples, Alisha Davis, Susanna Cramb, Candice Patterson, Laura Kirkland, Michelle Gourley, Jianguo Xiao and Wendy Sun. 🔗 Read the published paper here https://lnkd.in/gebFv7c5 #Research #BayesianModels #Epidemiology

Though he was commenting on sustainable behavioral change in regards to substance use, I think it speaks to the undercurrent global mental movement going on today in all aspects of healthcare. We are all intolerant of intolerance, with both ourselves and with other people. Well said Professor! #mentalhealth #chikobihealth #wellbeing #healthcare #addictionrecovery #behavioralhealth #positivechange #positivepsychology #carecoordination #management #supportgroup #globalmentalhealth #globalmentalmovement "But may have to do with just anchoring their lives with people who can understand their condition. So, the more tolerant to support, there's some support groups that say we tolerate nothing. Lack of tolerance seems to be one of the prevailing problems in this country in all manner of realms not just in the substance abuse world. So I'm kind of intolerant of intolerance." - Professor Robert Heimer, PhD Professor of Epidemiology and of Pharmacology of Yale University

❓ Will PACAP become a future migraine treatment? In the full episode of Spotlight On Migraine, leading researcher Dr. Messoud Ashina explains what PACAP is and how it is involved in migraine pathophysiology. He also talks about how it differs from CGRP and why it could be a promising target for migraine and other headache disorders. Watch the full podcast or read the transcript at https://lnkd.in/e8p2cKWw TRANSCRIPT 👇 So in the future, if PACAP passes this exam, you know, with the Phase 3 trials, I would say we will have another drug that we can offer, which is developed/designed to target the disease mechanisms, right, as equal as anti-CGRP medications. #Migraine #MigraineResearch #PACAP

Living with a rare condition can feel isolating, often frustrating and even debilitating – the realities of lives lived beyond the statistics. This year’s edition shines a light on people living with Progeria, a rare genetic disorder causing rapid ageing in children. Sciensus is dedicated to delivering life-changing medicines worldwide to people living with rare diseases, by using our global network to access patients and provide support and care. To mark Rare Disease Day 2024, we’ve partnered with ITN Business and Genetic Alliance UK for a special feature on ‘Rare Conditions: The Stories Behind the Stats‘, an enlightening news program designed to raise awareness about the realities of living with a rare disease. This year’s edition shines a light on people living with Progeria, a rare genetic disorder causing rapid ageing in children. Guided by ITN’s esteemed host Donna Bernard, we closely follow Sammy Basso’s inspiring journey as he navigates life with Progeria, all while passionately advocating for increased awareness of his condition. Mathieu Loiseau, Head of Rare Clinical Operations at Sciensus, provides valuable insights into our commitment to getting life-changing medications to people living with Progeria worldwide whilst enhancing health outcomes through the creation of tailored patient support programs and online communities. If only we treated our well-being like we did a flat battery on our mobile phone. What about the scramble for good Wi-Fi, especially if it’s free. Sadly, we don’t have an indicator on the side of us, but the technology is coming. We are really bad at reading our own ‘warning’ signs of a flat battery. If fact, we are good at completely ignoring them. We will even ignore that advice when given to eat healthy, exercise regularly, give up smoking, and reduce stress. There is a lot of research around the term ‘hyperbolic’ or ‘temporal’ discounting around seeking the immediate reward, rather than the long-term, better outcome. In fact, patients who have been told they have coronary artery disease, less than 15 % will take this advice. That means 6 out of 7 will not get more exercise, eat better, and give up smoking even though they have been told that it will kill them. Have a look at the PURE (Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology) research for more info https://zurl.co/dYgD Maybe we do need that indicator light on our arm. Rare Disease Day is an observance held on the last day of February to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to treatment and medical representation for individuals with rare diseases and their families. The European Organisation for Rare Diseases established the day in 2008 to raise awareness for unknown or overlooked illnesses. Treatment for many rare diseases is insufficient, as are the social networks to support individuals with rare diseases and their families. Plus, there are numerous days honoring people with particular illnesses (AIDS, cancer, diabetes, etc.), but there has never been a day for those who suffer from rare diseases. In 2009, Rare Disease Day went global as the National Organization for Rare Disorders mobilized 200 rare disease patient advocacy organizations in the United States, while organizations in China, Australia, Taiwan and Latin America also led efforts in their respective countries to coordinate activities and promote the day. SequenceMD is a medical genetics practice focused on the testing, diagnosis and management of unresolved symptoms, undiagnosed conditions and rare diseases for patients of all ages. In the lead up to Rare Disease Day, we will be sharing information about the SequenceMD practice and our focus on unresolved symptoms, undiagnosed conditions, and established genetic and metabolic diagnoses. "Attitudes toward opioid use are decidedly not uniform, even in the medical community, which has hampered the ability to curb an epidemic that is constantly setting deadly records." "The alcohol use treatment project is one of four chosen to use the concept of “nudging”—a behavioral science technique in which people are gently influenced toward making positive decisions—to improve care delivery." “The use of naltrexone for patients struggling with alcohol use is a clear case of an evidence-to-practice gap where a nudge could have significant impact,” said Kit Delgado, MD, an associate professor of emergency medicine and epidemiology and the director of the Nudge Unit.
