Last year I hosted a talk on reverse-engineering smart devices at The Long Con, Winnipeg's computer security conference. The presenter recordings were just posted on YouTube. We covered the good and bad of smart tech, and some demonstrations where music comes out of plugs and lightbulbs flash like they're shorting out. What it means - IoT is a mess. Many of us have smart devices at home but are not considering this is not a bulb or a plug, it's a computer. And perhaps the most neglected one that we own with access to our whole network. There really is growing evidence that a computer security standard would benefit consumers. Just like FCC or UL certification applies to US products, but for software design. What can we all do? Start by segmenting devices - separate those smart devices using guest network functions in home routers. Your iPhone gets updates, but do your plugs/bulbs?
