Transcript

Transporting nuclear waste sounds dangerous. I mean, aren't vehicular accidents super common? What if it caught on fire or exploded or rolled into a water body? This was a huge point of conversation during the Yucca Mountain debate, and it comes up in just about every argument about setting a permanent geologic repository. When truck and train transport routes passed by populated areas, residents and politicians get worried. It's understandable, but what they might not know is that nuclear waste transport casks are some of the most impenetrable structures on earth. Transportation containers have to pass a sequence of impact. Puncture, fire and water tests that cover pretty much every travel related accident you could possibly imagine. They can even survive a missile strike in an explosion. While these accidents are super unlikely to occur, the US Department of Energy and manufacturers like Holtec are taking no shortcuts here. So without further ado, I present to you transport cask testing. First up is a puncture task where a cask is dropped onto a spike. Then we've got a fire test where the whole entire thing is just set into flames. That's hot. Here's a water immersion test where they just drown it. And my personal. Favorite. The missile test, Believe it or not, the cask was completely fine. Now, toxic and hazardous chemicals are transported across the country by truck and rail all the time. Chemicals like benzene, vinyl chloride, and phosphoric, sulphuric, hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid can be cancer causing and carcinogenic, but they're encased in nothing but steel canisters. While accidents with these chemicals have been devastating to public health in the environment, remember this one final chloride. In Ohio, they don't face nearly as many restrictions as waste casks. Clear waste casks are tough as nails, not because the waste can easily escape and irradiate the world, but because it's important to people that we make the chance of something bad happening go from 0.0001% to 0.000001%. Moral of the story, unless you've got something stronger than a military grade missile up your sleeve, that waste is getting from point A to point B safely.

Great perspective! Though are you, as the young generation, fixated on your parents' past views and now doing the same by rebelling against their anti-nuclear views and missing the growth and advancement of the actual future of Nuclear energy and where it should be in this world energy-hungry world and leading? Is it not true or honest that nuclear energy is the energy of the sun brought down to earth as fusion and not the pretender called nuclear fission? Do you not see the tide receding from the shores of nuclear fission research, development, and power plant building? Is it not now becoming more evident to youth that a career in fusion energy is their path onto the subsequent technological tsunami wave to ride for their future and that will lead mankind to the advancement of new technologies of tomorrow?

Are you talking about spent nuclear fuel, or radioactive fission products? I would avoid using the term "nuclear waste", as it is misleading.

As the largest exporter of capital products to the nuclear industry in world, we are proud to be sending another shipment to our customers overseas. This HI-STAR 180D storage and transport cask is headed from our Holtec Manufacturing Division in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania to Doel, Belgium where it will store fuel at Syantom’s Doel Nuclear Power Plant.

Today, Holtec International filed a lawsuit against accounting firm CBIZ Inc., its subsidiary auditing firm CBIZ MHM, CBIZ executive Lonnie Davis, who operated out of CBIZ’s office in Plymouth Meeting, PA, and former Holtec executives Robert Galvin of Farmington, Connecticut and Andrew Ryan of Camden County, New Jersey, for alleged fraud linked to the formation of a rogue self-dealing operation called CBIZ Consulting LLC. The suit alleges that CBIZ Consulting was designed to fraudulently bill and collect hundreds of thousands of dollars from Holtec by using a deceptively similarly name to CBIZ. The complaint alleges egregious business misconduct including fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, civil conspiracy, and accounting malpractice against the CBIZ defendants and the two former Holtec executives. The suit further alleges that CBIZ is believed to have learned of CBIZ Consulting but chose to conceal its findings from Holtec. CBIZ MHM, a financial auditing firm, failed to uncover or notify Holtec of the similarly named but fraudulent company, according to the filing. The lawsuit states that the Defendants collectively caused Plaintiffs over $70 million in damage. “As we allege in our complaint, we should have been able to trust and rely on our accounting and auditing firm, but they led us in a direction that caused significant financial harm to the business,” said Kelly Trice, President of Holtec International. “We are committed to pursuing justice and ensuring accountability of CBIZ and former Holtec employees involved in this egregious misconduct.”
